david as father of 5 girls Who sail row and love boats, I can offer
the following suggestions.
1 Choose a simpl design eg a Pirougue, a basic ply canoe a very
simple pram dinghy. The y need to see a boat happening from the
first hour onwards. dont worry about sails etc a paddle /rowing job
will keep all happy and be min maintenance
2 Minimum fibeglassing eg seams only
3 They are building a boat, not you. I had to try really hard with
this bit , but they are capable of doing it. If the design is simple
try to do 2 A boys one and a girls one . The competition will help
them concentrate and distract the 2 sexes from each other , whatever
thier ages.
4. dont be shy to ask local businesses for donations of materials .
if you are building small and simple, people can afford to donate a
tin of varnish or a box of screws.Find a home for the boat after the
execise as no-one will want to spend time on maintenence and it will
end up in the weather rotting. Try raffling it off for a local
charity or a sweepstake amongst the builders to see who takes it home.
5. with luck and fortune yuo will set at least one mind on a course
to a future of woodwork, boatbuilding, engineering , painting. or
sailing.
Cheers paul
by the way when building with kids remember they initially shrink in
fresh water but then swell. Leave good gaps in centreboard case so
the swelling doesnt jamb the board.
I prefer plywood.

I would say no. Children are floppy, they creep, don't stand up well
to long term immersion, and present legal problems.

Have you seen the chapters on community boatbuilding projects in "The
Weekend Skiff" and "Build the 6 Hour Canoe"? Could easily be adapted
to any young group.
I have not children of my own (well, biological children...I'm a
school teacher so I have lots of children). I have enjoyed the
discussions about little people and boat building. Somebody, help!
