Re: Carved Cleats/Bitts
Hi
I've posted a couple of views (in the Chebaccos folder, in Photos in
Bolger 2) of the Jonesport cleat from the Chebacco plans. There are
no dimemsions shown, but using the scale, it's 12 inches from the
front of the stem to the tip of the "beak".

well thought out boat. Congrats Jamie.
Given the financial advice higher on the list, a Bolger boat with a
beer locker is the ticket.

the same width throughout, while mine is wider, narrowing down to
the "beak". The bird's eye is the bronze pin through the cleat.

Is there a back story to this design? Is it regional/traditional, or a PCB hallmark?

Now it makes a lot more sense...is this a PCB affectation, or something I have just plain missed elsewhere?

Are you talking about the Jonesport cleat?

Jamie,
Nice looking work, but I don't think this is the same thing...the bitt I am referring to is (in profile from side) sort of a "beaked bird head" facing aft...

Are you talking about the Jonesport cleat? A wonderful invention for
leading the anchor rope over the bow, as well as a good cleat.

Tell me more. I have my bow light at the top of the stem, and I'm needing
something to protect it from the anchor line.
I'm thinking have the jonesport cleat project over the light a bit.
I've been trying to figure out how to store and retrieve the anchor from
something projecting over the bow. Standing in the forward hatch, I can just
reach the cleat on the nose of my boat, I wouldn't be able to reach further
forward to put the anchor rode in any kind of guide.
From your picture, it appears you leave the rope in the jonesport cleat
guide ring, and bring the anchor and chain (back to the cockpit?).
Interesting, then to anchor all I would need to do is pull the anchor out of
the anchor well and drop it over the side (and set it of course). To
retrieve, I would hoist it through the ring in the jonesport cleat then take
a boat hook or something and grab the line. Pull the anchor and popp it into
the storage compartment.
Enough gap under the hatch I think to lead the rope in and close the
hatch...
Can we get more detailed pictures?

Are you talking about the Jonesport cleat? A wonderful invention for
leading the anchor rope over the bow, as well as a good cleat. I
scaled mine up from the profile on the Chebacco plans. If I remember
rightly, the only thing not clear there is the vertical U cut into
the forward part to hold the anchor line.
For more detailed drawings you might try looking for articles on
Bobcat, PCB's 12 foot catboat. I think WoodenBoat did a series of
articles on building her that showed some details -- the book on
building Bobcat might also have these. I don't have either at hand
to check, but I saw drawings or pictures somewhere, and these are the
most likely places.
