For wind angles forward of the beam Bolger recommends slacking the main slightly and lashing the helm...boat will self steer. I've tried it, it works.

If your mizzen rotates 360 deg around you can use it as a windvane on any point of sail.....uh, except in my experience sheet to tiller self steering works best with the boat balanced. May be hard to balance with your mizzen as your windvane.

The suggestion for surgical tubing is that it stretches in a linear fasion whereas bungee does not.

What the heck! Try it and see what happens.

No, have a bunch of bungee laying around.

Haven't tried it, just an idle thought and was wanting to get comments
before I tried it.

Have some tubing too. May experiment next time I go sailing.

Have you tried using the surgical tubing Bueller mentions, as well as Lin &
Larry Pardy. You can get it at any hobby store especially ones that deal
with model airplanes as they are used to launch model sail planes.
Different sizes for different strength. Can be cut in any length, best of
all , cheap. You can also get sliding clamps with a thumb release for
unlimited adjusting.
Idle thoughts....

Run the sheet(s) from the mizzen on the Chebacco to the corners, then make a
big X to the back of the cockpit (port mizzen sheet to starboard side of
boat, etc).

Then run them to the tiller.

Adjust course, adjust main, let mizzen weathercock or fill slightly.

Cleat off windward mizzen sheet on tiller. Might need bungee too.

Instant wind vane!

Boat points up, mizzen slacks, bungee pulls tiller to windward.
Boat falls off, mizzen fills, pulls tiller to leewards!

Thoughts? (I know I'm reinventing the wheel...)

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
