Re: [bolger] Re: Pete Reynolds
Col,
I've built zephyr, surf's the bigger sister (20ft). Still light enough to
move around with a dolly, though quite a handfull to cartop. with a
trailer, however, you shouldnt have any trouble.
rows well and sails really nice, and i managed not to capsize her
so far. but watch out - in gusty winds she is not for the faint-
hearted! Very much like sailing a canoe.

Hi Col,
As a dedicated non-swimmer,I am glad to report that I have
never capsized my Surf although I did find myself in conditions that
would have made this all too easy.I did add all the floatation she
can take in the ends. This, combined with a most forgiving rig, boosted
all my confidence and it does take alot of that to sail on the
St.Lawrence river with all the metal flake madmen out here!
I kept her at dinghy park and routinely launched her with one
of the dollies,no sweat at all!
Her rowing option has always been most useful for snooping
around yacht clubs or island approaches. The rig is a joy to use and a
breeze to take down.
With 20/20 hindsight,it is hard to imagine a simpler boat to
build for all her capabilities and she cartainly is light enough to
man handle around with a dolly. However,I wouldn't want to suggest
that she is in the canoe category of "light enough".
Like most small boats in this class, you will acquire the
necessary techniques/methods of dealing with her to your advantage.
I hope you build her,she is loaded with fun potential!!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan.........

Peter,
Thanks for the tip, I looked up the files and found your Surf.
Thanks to the group for the other suggestions - I've often drooled
over Michael Storers sailing canoe BETH, but I want a fairly quick
and easy (and cheap) project. My son is only 8 and BETH might be a
bit too much of a handful.
A couple of questions if I may - my Green Island 15 is too heavy for
beach launching and needs a ramp, as Micro will be. We have some
great protected bays near my location (Byron Bay in particular) which
are great for sailing, and is utilised by many beach launched
catamarans. For me to get there however I need to cross a bar and
sail about 30 kilometres of open Pacific ocean - not often
possible. I wanted this brief diversion to produce a boat that I
can tow to some of these areas, slide her off the Green Island
trailer in the carpark and use dolly wheels to take her down the
beach. If I am by myself is Surf light enough to do this? It looks
like she is but I thought I'd ask.
Did you capsize her and is she easy to right?
Thanks in anticipation,
Col
