Re: Surf/Zephyr, was: Pete Reynolds

Dynamite advertises Zephyr as a "stretched version of Surf". Zephyr
uses a lateen rig however. Any comments on this rig as compared to
the standard one? Certainly has a nice short mast and easy to reef.

Also "Pirate Racer" is very similar except it is shorter, a bit
beamier and has a loose-footed lateen sail. It also has fairly
sophisticated leeboards as compared to the other two.

Col,
yes, both boats are very similar. have a look at harold paysons
website (www.instantboats.com, i think).
not sure what you mean by powerful. she is a narrow boat, and
with only one aboard it doesnt need much wind to make you ease
the sheet. you definitely need a reef for all but the lightest breezes
when sailing solo.
i made the bow&stern compartments longer to have more flotation
in case of capsize. the boats shape makes it really easy to figure
out how big they have to be to give you the amount of flotation you
want.
i recommend the excellent discussion of the subject on jim
michalaks website!

have fun
