Re: Woodenboat Magazine
My take on this is that Woodenboat is essential for anyone who is
interested in traditional boats and boatbuilding.
There is not another publication in the new world to touch it. There
are several magazines in the UK and Europe that are similar, but in the
US, Woodenboat is it.
Woodenboat is the core of my boating magazine collection. It and the
old "Small Boat Journal" were the first two magazines I ever subscribed
to, and I had to drop the latter when it transmorgafied into the
distastfully slick "Boating World".
"Messing About in Boats" is equally essential for anyone interested in
small craft, and vital if you're a Bolger fan.
Mike O'brien's "Boat Design Quarterly" is my choice for the next
magazine to subscribe to, if you can afford another one. Nowhere else
will you be exposed to the range of designs, past and present, that are
presented.
The only other possibility is "Boatbuilder", which is worthy primarily
for the fairly regular contributions of Dave Gerr, who, along with
Bolger, is probably the closest thing this generation has to a Billy
Atkin or L.F. Herreshoff.
Of course, these are just my opinions, YMMV.
