to W.S. Gilbert, i.e. a recurrent theme that has never matured.
The first reference I know of is Chapter 14 of The Floating Schooner:
"The Pari-Mutual Schooner Project. The last is the Chapter on
Gloucester schooners in Boats With an Open Mind. In between there a few
mentions and a novel.
I don't think the betting will fly in the US, but the racing might.
They do it with 12-meters in the Caribbean.

Speaking of racing around in circles, I'm pretty sure that I read a piece by
Bolger somewhere where he was speculating about using circular courses to
replace triangular ones, with parimutual betting on one-design schooners to
provide the wherewithall to finance the extravaganza. Anyone remember the
citation?
HARD water Bill.

Hmm. Changing the rules of yacht racing! Count me in. they are
stupid.
1. all boats must be built by the sailors on the boat (yacht)
2. any means of human/sail/solar... no octane propulsion is allowed
3. You will be allowed to slow down your competitor by any means legal
except of course through the use of small firearms and explosives.
4. The boats must arrive at the site of the contest under their own
power.
5. The spending limit will be determined by what is considered the
poverty level of the particular hosting country.
6. All boats must be made out of recyclable materials.
7. There are no rules.
8. Race courses will be determined by the sailors, not a race
committee. Undoubtably they will choose one that actually goes
somewhere! not around in circles because THAT IS BORING!
