Re: [bolger] EPOXY COATING

I know this is a tight lipped bunch, and not given to public comment, but I would like to get some opinions on this subject also. My neighboor died and left me six sheets of 1/4" luan ply. I intend to build a Tortoise with a few them this winter. I thought it would be a good chance to practice a bright finish on luan (for perhaps the deck of a Sneakeasy, or a trolly car cabin on a sharpie). If I screw up, I can always paint it.

- I assume it's going to need glass, not just for abrasion/impact resistance, but for increasing the structural strength of the luan on a boat that was designed for fir plywood. Would you glass inside and out? Or just glass the outside ? Or not at all. (Your comment has been noted David. Tell us why)

- Will she be too heavy if totally glassed?

- Glassing around those chine logs on Tortoise may be difficult. Has anyone built her tack and tape style?

- If someone were making a tack and tape boat and wanted a bright finish, is there a clear filler/thickener for making seam fillets?

- Is Tortoise the wrong boat to practice a bright finish on? Perhaps a more shapely boat would show off the beauty of the wood better. LOL. Who's built a gold plated Tortoise out there?

Stew,
thinking he won't get that roof on the garage this fall if the weather stays like this...
-Hi Steve, There is Luan and there is Luan. My Hawkeye has several
different kinds of plywood. Fir Marine Plywood and 3 other types
loosely categorized as "Luan". Only the fir checked. It has since been
sanded down and glassed. The motor cover was constructed of what is
probably luan underlayment. This is slowly disintegrating (but not
checking). The rest of the boat is fine with epoxy only. The point is
what kind of plywood
are you using in terms of the glue and quality of construction. The
junk will fall apart the good stuff probably will not check. Checking
is a function of different density in the grain. If it is all "summer"
wood there is no difference so no differential expansion. (I think).
The answer to your question is "It depends" which of course is no
answer.

I have been pleasantly surprised with how well the portions of my
luan dories that have only epoxy (no glass) have held up. Much less
checking than the "dry" areas. Of course the luan in general doesn't
check nearly as much as fir!!!

For the future, anthing I put epoxy on is going to get glassed too.

Yes. No.

I have a couple of disposable boats made out of lauan. The epoxy coating did
not stop the checking.

Hi Group
Has anyone had experience coating luan ply with epoxy only, no
fiberglass cloth. This would be for areas of boat not submerged.
Will it stop checking?
