RE: [bolger] Re: brick
When I was at college I spent some time in a workshop building things on
lathes etc. It seemed pretty common place to include the minimum number of
dimensions to the point that occasionally they would need to be calculated
from the numbers that were shown.
On the plans for the boat Im building ive sometimes been unable to find
dimensions. They are there, its just that they are difficult to find.

It's good practice not to "double dimension" anything, as if you have
little errors you can get conflict between the dimensions. Best to
put in the dimensions needed to make the part. If you add any extras
you mark them "ref", but I bet if he put those on the plans, people
would use them, mess them up, and then look at the other dimensions
and decide it's all wrong.

I just checked my plans and all the dimensions I looked for regarding
those items are present. Sometimes it's not immediately obvious, as
in the case of the rudder, but there are enough dimensions to define
the part fully. Do you have all the sheets? (I forget if that is two
or some greater number of sheets.)

Unless you didn't get the full plans I'm sure all the dimensions you
need are on there. If you start with a blank sheet of plywood (or a
sheet of paper) and transfer every line shown on the plans you'll get
everything you need. Some things may be hard to spot, like the end
points of the diagonal line separating the rudder halves. But if you
move down one long edge of the ply 29" from the corner, then in at a
right angle 15 3/4", that point connected to the other corner of the
sheet of ply is the line you want. (I'm doing this from memory, so check).
Leeboards show as 16" x 60" with a 16" radius at the bottom.
See, you have to get the two 16" leeboards and the 15 3/4" piece (to be
split diagonally) for the rudder halves out of the 48" width of ply
minus the saw cut kerfs .....
And so on ...
If you call Payson in the morning and ask him (or Ma, if he's out on a
joyride) the dimension of any part, I bet you I know what he'll say to
you first, ... ..

Sounds like you are missing a sheet or two - the copy of Brick's plans in
BWAOM has all the details you are looking for.
Cheers
Derek

I could do that,. . . but they are not drawn on the plans.

I decided to switch from building a gypsy to building a brick. After
difficulty with Common Sense Boats (I received a letter from Oregon
Atty General office today saying they are looking into it) I ordered
plans from H. H. Payson, as I had the gypsy plans. The brick plans
are quite sparse compared to the gypsy plans. How do I get the
dimensions for the rudder, lee board, mast step, mast, etc.?
