Hello Steve,
Perhaps the best way to really learn how to sail would be to
take sailing lessons for a few weeks. These courses need not be
expensive and offer you the chance to learn the theory and put it to
practice in a short time frame. Also, there is usually a recommended
text to accompany the course which you get to keep later as reference
material as you"perfect" your own technique.
Both Bolger and Mickalak offer a nice range of small sail boats
for you to build and use but since this is a Bolger list(no offense
Mickalak fans,I like him too!) I would like to recommend you get hold
of INSTANT BOATS by Harold Payson in which you will find several
sailing designs,by Bolger, which are designed to be both relatively
easy to build and not too expensive.Paysons' book pretty much walks
you through the building process of the TEAL design which serves as
something of a template for the other sail designs presented in the
book.I would also recommend getting the full size plans to make the
whole affair that much more enjoyable :-)
I built Bolgers SURF design several years ago and used it
heavily with great satisfaction and pleasure.
Good luck with your choice!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan.........

I'm building the Big Tortoise as practice for building a Micro.
I have a Capri 14.2, a fiberglass sloop. I've always thought
the Capri was a bit overcanvassed for beginning sailors, though
we learned well enough on it. Perhaps June Bug would be a good
choice. It would be economical, easy shape, one sail. For learning
it would have, I believe some good features.

1. It has one sail, it's cat rigged. If I had to teach someone to
sail and I had a choice, I would do it in a stable, cat rigged
boat, not a sloop. After they could sail well, then a sloop
would be appropriate.
2. I've never been in one, but the shape of the June Bug would
appear to give it good initial stability. Of course it could
tip if caught off guard and I believe it could use some foam
flotation. I believe any small, essentially unbalasted sailboat
could use some foam or flotation chambers.
3. By all accounts, the June Bug sails well, which would inspire
confidence in a beginning sailor.

I'm sure there are a dozen of Bolger and Michalak boats which
would answer, this was just an idea. Charles

Hi Charles , Lake Almanor would be perfect , nice and calm not to
busy even in the high summer , In fact I have been thinking about my
next boat and thought I might try a small sailing boat for a change ,
I know nothing about sailing , but want to learn , been looking at
both Bolger and Jim mickalak For ideal boat to learn , If you or any
one else could offer advice ,would be gratefull ,regards Steve

MS Word does all kinds of funky stuff when you do a "save as web
page".

This causes some browsers to choke on the pictures.

Anybody know a quick fix short of rebuilding the page in good html by
hand?

Is there a chance you can recover it from an "automatic backup"
version that
you have (and forgot about)? Word some times makes automatic backups.
There
are also programs that do that for you, like AutoSave, a real
lifesaver. As
you save files, it retains multiple versions. It's cheap - Bill

Thanks Richard and Jamie,

Seems that your photos load fine Richard. I was wondering if Jamie's
are in a different format or something. I was wantig to ogle the Port
Townsend photos. I have a friend lives in that area.

I really appreciate your efforts Richard and am sending a
contribution to help with the maintenance of the site.

I also appreciate Bruce's effort.

Hell, I appreciate everybody's!

Funny that you need one expensive program to clean up after another
expensive
program. If I was of the paranoid bent I'd think it was a conspiracy.
It's a
conspiracy.

DreamWeaver cleaned up MS Word's crappy html and all the folks having
problems
with the page should be able to view it now.

Hello Stephen-I have a question, what are the conditions on Lake
Almanor, in spring and summer of course, for sailing with small
boats? I can drive there, though it's uphill. I live in the
Sacramento Valley. I;ve often wondered abouting boating, it's a nice
