MDO-OMG

Hi Group,
Missed getting on board earlier on this week due to pressing
concerns over WINDERMEREs' winter cover....
Anyway, there are DIFFERENT levels of quality out there on the
market for MDO. I have seen stuff sold in local Reno-Depots that
looked exactly like nothing more then kraft paper glued cheaply onto
junk fir ply. This so called paper can almost be peeled off by hand.
Another type goes by the name of Zepher(or close to it)and is
apparently made in Canada. The overlay is a bit better but the panel
itself is almost useless with voids hidden all over the place.
And then there is stuff like Crezon MDO etc... produced by Simpson
Ply.
This stuff is right up there. When using a real epoxy sealer( as
apposed to just dumping your regular resin on the panel) it takes 3
coats to become fully impregnated with epoxy. This has two benefits
for the builder;1)excellent(perfect?) water-barrier ,2) you can
attain a perfect glass smooth surface for a knock-your-eyes-out-of-
their-sockets finish.
For a test, glue the overlayed surfaces together from two trial
parts. The good stuff will literally rip apart within the wood veneer
leaving the so called"paper" in place.
The sealing resins must have a viscosity closer to paint thinner
then warm maple syrup to fully penetrate the overlay and achieve this
performance.
Keep in mind, this is not the cheapest route nor is it always
required to use your boat.Heaven knows that just about anything can
be made to float and be very servicable.Ask yourself,"just what the
heck do I want here, a "boat" or a "yacht"? Once you are clear with
your answer, then act accordingly and good luck!! :-D
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, from the snowy shores of the St.Lawrence.........
