Re: Building Bolger's Nymph

Mike has a good point, but often 4 oz is more expensive and narrower
than 6, which is why I used 6. The difference would be in the order
of 12oz a side per complete sheat of plywood. I strongly recomend
glassing the gunnels if you do go to the trouble of glassing all the
ply. They are a bigger maintenance pit than the ply. I have
progesively glassed more of each dingy I made, and the one I am
currently using just sits outdoors rain, snow or shine, and has zero
maintenance. I glassed the inside sole, all of the outside, and the
gunnels/shears. Next time I will probably do all of the inside.

Hi -

6 oz. is overkill - 4 oz. is plenty. If you aleady have the 6 paid
for and don't mind the extra weight, gopher it.

Nymph is a great little boat - you will be pleased.

LOL, you must be kidding!

Building Bolger boats couldn't be
*more* "on-topic".

Keep us posted on every detail.

You didn't ask for advice, [but
should that stop me? No. :) ]

IMO, building speed is a trade off
between barging ahead, and making a few
mistakes [& fixing or accepting them
as-is]. Versus, going slow and getting
it perfect the first time. Your choice.

Mistakes are not usually as bad as
you fear, and often are OK "as-is".

& Every time you mark a line, step back
and look at it, trying to visualize if
it 'will fit' before you cut.

Good luck , with your Nymph You will have a really usefull
boat ,without much outlay , we had fun building ours , although we
added to the design some what !!! but thats the fun of it , have a
look in the photos under Students, once again , best of luck , keep
us posted as to your progress , Steve Dandridge

Congrats on starting a boat. It's always fun to watch it take shape. I
built my Nymph last winter out of 1/4 marine fir plywood. I glassed inside
and out just in case. I plan on using it as a dingy for my Wyoming, maybe,
it depends on it's abilities. I have yet to put it in the water but it sits
there waiting for paint.

Best of luck and keep us up to date on your progress.

Jeff

Hello, group!

I just started building Bolger's Nymph this evening. I spent 1.5
hours, and got the first side panel and the bottom laid out. This
seems like slow progress to me, but I took my time, and I am
confident that the lines are fair and accurate.

I did the sweeping by clamping a six foot aluminum ruler to #8
finishing nails at the offset locations.

The Nymph will be built of Home Depot BC exterior pine at $10.88 per
sheet. I lucked in to a stack that was knot free, and did not seem
to have many voids at all. I swear I'd call it BB, rather than BC.
They must have needed to fill an order, and not had any poor veneers
on hand. I agonized about marine grade, but decided $43 per sheet
was just too steep for a first effort that might turn out a mess.

I had actually bought luan, but it was such junk I took it back.

The boat will be sheathed in 6oz glass secured with West epoxy. I've
been reading the posts, and will consider glassing the inside as well
to control checking.

Hope I'm not boring the more experienced hands, but I will try to
keep the group posted on progress.
