Re: oar

Yes. I find the drawknife and long plane most useful, but I've been
messing with a couple of spokeshaves for some of the tricky parts
where it curves.

Have you tried a spokeshave? Good for the more delicate stuff. Used
to use a drawknife to peal DF logs when I was in BC. Used them to
build a Sauna hut.

Finished making my first one piece oar. Well, ok, I may go back and
shave it a little here and there. Took a while, but maybe faster next
time, tho it would really help if I had a better bench and a bandsaw.
It looks convincingly round, fairly smooth, but is a little heavy on
blade end, maybe a touch fat just above the blade (say 1/16" or 1/8")
and the handles could be a little more convincing. Also have to figure
out a better way to treat the transition from handle to shaft. I found
that measuring and marking were a bit of a pain as I wanted a little
more precision than I was getting with a pencil. Maybe took me 4
hours???? Need to make them MUCH faster. Drawknives are very fun.
