Re: angle of stem

Just so, or you could break out the sidewalk chalk and sketch em out.
When you come up with something you like, Whip out the protractor and
measure. Might have the neighbors scratching their heads, but that's
a good thing, in my book.

Since you say the stem will be plumb, I assume you mean the bevel
angle as would be seen looking end-on at the stem piece. Otherwise
put, how fat should the bow be?

The answer would be no, there isn't any particular formula. Most
boatbuilders would put their bevel on the plan and work from there.
Which begs the question: how fat to draw in on the plan.

If the bow is up out of the water in the Bolger manner then it can be
quite fat, but that requires a sharp bend in the chines, sides and
gunwale. It will also require a frame forward to force the bend.

If the bow is down in the water, then it should be pretty sharp. I
would look at the Bolger boats and all the other sources of easy-to-
build boats for an idea. Then you might take a piece of stock and
give it some bends and see what you like.

Roger,
Unless I have completely mis-read your post,it would appear that
you are going to build a boat with a plumb stem. The angle for this
0,since it is plumb and as for a formula.....use a level against the
stem piece before attaching to make sure it stays true and plumb.

Hello fellow boat builders
Well i know this might sound krazy to ask, but iam trying to do my
own design, why should i with the best of the designers Mr Phil an Mr
Jim, ive been working on this for sometime started one boat but
unhappy with it, just parts now, iam wanting to go 16 foot long an 4
foot wide, 36 inches high in the bow an have the top sheer line drop
to 24 inches high at the transom, flat run bottom an a plum stem an
sides, power will be large trolling motor or small 4 cycle gas of no
more than 10 hp.. this will be used on small lakes in west
tennesse,area.. There are restrictions on power, an i aint going to
be in any hurry either, got every thing figured out except for the
angle of the stem post. Is there a fromula for this ??????? any help
would be nice.. I am going to try one more time, an if i wont work
out i,ll build the campjohn, lol which i have the plans for, but would
like to have a boat that was my own idea, Mr Phil an Mr Jim an the
Ducksworks have been my inspriation, have a good holiday an thanks an
remember Pro,s built the Titanic an an amature built the Ark
