the teal? No. Is it a tipsy boat? Well not by my reckoning; and the
aspects that make it more tender than the teal make it a much better
rowboat. There is no free lunch.
If the dog is well trained, it can do nothing but improve the
stability of the Gull. I notice a big difference in how tender the
boat is when I'm in it myself vs when I've got myself, my wife, my
daughter, and our 100 pound dog, i.e. the boat gets stiffer. I'm sure
camp gear and a dog would have the same effect. That should also give
you an idea of what kind of load the boat can carry and still row
easily.
Speaking of rowing easily, I've clocked myself with my GPS. At an "I
could do this all day" pace, the boat moves along at 3.2 statute
miles per hour. At an "I've got somewhere to be" pace, make that
about 4 mph. When I'm coming in through the surf and really laying
into it, I've broken six mph.
There may be a boat that would fill the requirements as well as a
Gull. I'd be surprised to find one that does it better.

David

My 11' Blackberry design has proven to be a good "back of a pickup"
boat. It certainly has the capacity for a woman, her dog, and gear
for a week, provided she is of the travel-light ethic. I figure the
boat will be quite safe up to about 425 lbs. displacement. It also
has greater initial stability than a GLD. There is a 14' version
availible capable of carrying even greater loads.

One of my fellow boatbuilders of the Juneau Not Organized Boatbuilders
(were not amateurs anymore), is looking for a boat she can throw in the
back of her truck and take to lakes in Canada and road side launches on
the coast , and go camping with her dog for a week. She is thinking a
little 2 wheel dolly on the end to get it to the water. Fritz and I have
recommended the Light Dory, my only reservation is stability with the
dog on board. She is a superb boat handler about 110 lbs and physically
very tough.
Any comments? especially David as he has been using his Dory in less
than stable conditions.
