Richard,
I can also recommend building a kickup rudder, except when you
always sail from a dock. also, tie it down with a piece of string (no
need to spring for a cotter pin).
if your your rudder is wood it will float off with the right size of wave.
the aft deck is definitely not a nice place for a tall fellow fiddling to
get pintles and gudgeons back together again.

Richard,
I built and owned a Surf many years ago and found it best to
build a simple swing up rudder.Unless you are very small/light,that
aft deck gets narrow very fast and stability could become a
problem. Also,I found it more relaxing when making a landing to have
only the leeboard to concern myself with while the rudder
is "automatically"raised as contact with the beach is made.If you
have ever tried to make a landing with an on-shore breeze, imagine
triming the main, steering the boat, plucking the leeboard AND raising
the rudder.........very very buzy stuff for only hands and one set of
teeth :-)
Some pictures of my Surf are located in the files section under
SURF.
She is a great little boat, have fun building and using her!!!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, who built some "twist" into his Surf before he could
dance,from along the St.Lawrence..........

I do this with my Teal (the Surf's little sister) all the time. When
I get hit by just the right wave at just the right angle, I take
water over the rail. (I sail out through the surf.)

Easy solution: build a kick up rudder.

I am currently building the Surf design, and wonder if the rudder can
be hung while away from shore. It seems to me that the sailor might
have to lean too far aft to retain stability while reaching back to
hand the rudder on the stern. Anyone with information or experience
on this? Thanks, Richard
