I have seen large slingshots for water balloons made with surgical
tubing. About 5 feet long and mounted to the rail.

A bit north of you I have observed cowboys using black
powder, sewer pipe and bowling balls in combination with
beer. Very impressive but perhaps overkill (excuse the
expression) for a PWC, however obnoxious.

They do make them but you use a rag as cushion for the balloon. The
water balloon guns are larger and you use schedule 40 8" PVC for the
chamber and reduce that to 4" for the barrel. Only about 8 in 10
balloons make the trip but the trick is to not fill the balloon all
the way with water. You leave about 60% water and 40% air. If they
have hanked their main you can aim at the sail and as it sloshed down
the crew will take a good shower.

The US has actually made rail guns( electric cannons) that start the
projectile with the same basic combustion chamber that spud guns use.
As far as liability and whacking PWC operators I have yet to have any
come back and complain about being knocked off his little rice rocket
because they are cowards who hit and run. If I ever did get stopped I
would just say that it was the darndest thing I ever saw when that
duck collided with the Jet Ski driver.

I have been around spud guns since the early eighties, the Klamath
Basin where I live produces almost as many potato's as Idaho but I
think their original use was for shooting tennis balls. If you do
make a BIG water balloon gun I would suggest wrapping it with the
reinforced packaging tape in case the chamber cracked. I think I
might even use schedule 80 PVC for a balloon launcher since it can
take double the pressure. Since there is so much farming in our
community most dealers have lots of odds and ends that they sell at
discount.

Most farmers around here have at least one or two of these spud guns
because about ten years ago they were a big craze. The fourth of July
has a lot of produce rocketing through the air in these parts. Water
Balloons against other boats would be a lot of fun.

You should be able to if you use a sabot to hold the water balloon.

Wished a spud gun could be made to shoot water balloons.

We have weekend wars between sail boats by heaving water balloons at each
other when entering or leaving the docks. Innocent fun but would like more
range from the dock.

As a peace-loving and cowardly sort of guy, I think this is a fine FANTASY
but poor advice. You will have an exposure to civil liability for battery,
bodily injury (however trivial it may be - the court won't discriminate),
intentional infliction of emotional distress, loss of consortium, etc., etc.
- your insurance carrier will probably disclaim coverage for intentional or
criminal acts, so even if a jury finds in your favor, you'll have defense
costs up the wazoo. (and if the jury finds against you and awards damages,
you're likely to be bankrupt, if the defense costs haven't already
accomplished that!) You probably will have an exposure to criminal
prosecution for assault and battery and whatever else the criminal code in
your state has prescribed. (in this case, your insurance carrier will
definitely disclaim coverage, so not only will you have large defense costs,
but a whole lot of indignities while being "processed" through the criminal
justice system and a lot of occupational disqualifications in the event of an
adverse verdict.) Then there is the possibility that the "welted" PWC
operator (who had not demonstrated any consideration, judgment or
intelligence in the confrontation so far) will escalate the conflict - like a
"drive-by" with a real UZI or something more diabolical.

I think "spud-guns" are fun. But I wouldn't aim one at a person. (excepting
only a fear-for-my-life, no-possible-retreat situation - in which case I'd
want something more serviceable for doing bodily harm - like a shotgun.)

As far as restraining the excesses of obnoxious PWC operators goes, there is
no substitute for the "gummit" as a mediator and ultimate enforcer. It was
about 30 years ago that snowmobiles suddenly proliferated in MN. The first
several years were notable for reckless operation, rampant trespassing,
widespread property damage, etc., etc. Somehow, the afflicted landowners and
the SkiDoo operators managed to find a reasonably satisfactory accommodation
through the mediation of manufacturers, dealers, operators, landowners and
politicians. Funds were found to finance trails, easements, crossings & etc.
Operators were persuaded to be more considerate of their impact upon others.
This is not to say that all disputes have been resolved, or ever will be, but
it is definitely preferable (IMHO) to having the concerned individuals
attempting to resolve their conflicts by shooting at on another with
projectiles, however primitively dispatched or purportedly non-lethal those
projectiles might be.

Oh, my! have I gotten off topic!

Peter, an Idaho Uzi is just a spud gun. You can rename it anything
you want and make it as powerful as you want but the basic idea is to
propel a potato to at least 200ft/sec. I always shoot as the buggers
are going away and "I LET THEM THINK THEY ARE OUT OF HARMS WAY".

These sites can help you make a Bolger boat protector, starter
cannon for races and protection from bank fisherman who chuck heavy
weights at your boat. I like then for just plain distance shooting
and it is possible to build very large ones that can reach over a 1/4
mile distance. It's amazing what PVC pipe can make.

O.K. John, now you have to tell the rest of us Bolgerados just what is
an Idaho Uzi ! Is there a Tennessee Uzi,Wyomming Uzi.....heaven
forbid....a Windermere Uzi?
Whatever this "thing" is, I want one too( or at least the plans on
how to build one) since it doesn't kill the idiots on the machines
but may knock some sense into their heads!
The thought of trailing lines is also a neat idea, especially if it
can disable those darned machines.
The nearest I've come to doing damage however,is to try a sling-shot
and rocks.Whenever one of those idiots appears to be speeding my
way,I take it out and start taking shots. Not at the sea-doo but the
water about 20 feet ahead of him, tracking him as you let one fly.It
doesn't take them long to get the idea that maybe, just maybe, you are
actually aiming at THEM and simply missed the first few shots. They do
not dare try to get any closer to confirm this............:-)

Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan,really a very peaceful guy,at heart........
I sail a white Catamaran when I am capable and the white of my PVC
Idaho Uzi is indistinct when they harass my boat. While the are
skittering away a 16 oz potato knocks them off their spray maker
nicely. My wife wouldn't let me go with the harpoon gun option.

If things get out of hand with a patrol boat then the PVC Uzi sinks
without a problem. On a Wyo a series of these across the stern could
look like exhaust pipes as long as you hide the outboards.

I don't mind PWC's as long as they don't try Bonzi runs at the side
of my boat then turn and drench me with a wall of water, cute for
them. As they try to run away most of the fall off. Idaho Uzi's are
cheap and disposable they also leave a neat shaped welt.
