Re: Sea Pearl 21
I vote Anhinga. Not really compareable, but small amounts of scaling
would probably sort it out.
Since the SP people seem to have seen the light in converting it to a
trimaran, I would recomend a Jarcat, which at 16' has a lot more
useable space than anything we are looking at, and it a very quick to
set-up boat.
Best thing you can say about the styling is that it is '70s, but the
builder can tweak that.

A couple more Sea Pearl alternates, just for the sake of creating
confusion.
From Bolger's book Small Boats, there is a 18' peapod/whaler named
Dolphin that has a hull shape about as close to Sea Pearl as is
reasonable to look for. However, Bolger is dubuious about he sail
rig, and the boat is strip construction. If you wanted a row boat, a
big light dory might make more sense, and several of the other boats
mentioned make more sense as a sailboat.
Legend has it that the Sea Pearl is derived from L. Francis
Herreshoff's boat Carpenter which is shown in Sensible Cruising
Designs. This is a fairly complex boat, lap construction with a dory
bottom. LFH liked boats that were easy to sail, but he didn't have a
clue about making a boat easy to build. Carpenter is a little over
17' long.
You might take a look at John Welsford's designs, especially the 6
Meter Whaler and Pathfinder at

I've a dutch friend whose 74, owned a Hallman 20 and sold it last fall (2001). He bought a nice little tug (26') with a nice single engine diesel. He would motor, I would sail. This is in the North Channel of Lake Huron. Worked out great for me. I always had a nice place to sit when we got to an achorage. But, he was bored. By the end of the summer he sold the tug, and bought another small sailboat (Nash 20) for next summer. There you go, eh.

Hi Robert,
Most folks who own an Edel love them too! A very nice French
design which got built, under license, about 15 minutes away from where
I am writing this,in ville St.Laurent.
The cs 20 looks sweet and fun to build too! It's not a Bolger
design though......nevertheless,it is a plywood iteration of a more
complex shape and the rigging is dirt simple. She will certainly
launch and retieve in under 30 minutes, with practice :-)
On a good forecast and some proper camping gear, this would be
a fine beach cruiser! I used to do a lot of that with a Mistral 404
and later with a Bolger SURF.I would need a very compelling reason to
do it now-a-days since I converted to the sins of hedonism..........
Good Luck with your search and let
us know what you finally decide to build.BTW,does it have to be a
sailboat,what you are looking for?
Sincerely,

SP21 doesn't look all that comfortable for overnite camping, but, it
looks easy to trailer, set up, launch, and sail. But for some
reason, they seem very expensive on the used market. Supply and
demand I suppose. As I've already mentioned, the Core Sound 17/20
looks to be in the same category as a SP21. Simplicity of rigging is
a big asset.

Since you brought it up on this forum -
The Core Sound 20 is one foot shorter but bigger, lighter, more
stable (by a lot), faster, cheaper, just as pretty, needs no
fiddling with ballast, all round better boat and can be home built.
No contest.
Can just about say all the same things about the Core Sound 17.
Sorry for the ambiguous remarks.

What about Windfola? About the same length but beamier, rounded
hull, double-ended, two-masted rig, and a very pretty lapstrake
hull. (I think it's in "Small Boats.")
Actually, the closest thing I can think of in designs for home
building isn't a Bolger boat: it's the Core Sound 20 by Graham Byrne
at B&B yacht designs. The CS 20 is a 20-foot v-bottomed cat ketch.

Robert,
I think the Bolger design that comes closest to the SeaPearl 21 is
the Jinni cat yawl. Another similar Bolger boat is the #2 Beach

Robert,
With your comfortable and unsinkable EDEL 540,I am curious as
to what exactly you are seeking in Bolger-rama.From what I can recall
of how a Sea Pearl looks, the plan view on page 45 of BWAOM looks very
similar.....but smaller at only 15'.Will this be your first
boatbuilding adventure? Are you seeking overnighting comforts? tell
us more :-).....

looks I think the Birdwatcher would do everything the Seapearl would
do and then some.
I can't count the number of times I've wished I built Birdwatcher
instead of a Light Scooner. Don't get me wrong, I love my scooner,
but it's way too much boat for a fellow who mostly sails alone, or
with his two year old daughter. If I'd have build a Birdwatcher,
Maggie and I would have had more days on the water and been able to
travel further a field in greater comfort/safety.

Dovekie is a good example of a boat intended to do the same job. So is
Birdwatcher.
You can't build a Dovekie, though. Gotta buy one used or see if Edey and
Duff will still make you one.
