Re: Opinions welcome

The only two problems I see at the moment are what to do with the
profile, and the displacement. Motorboats usualy have a ballance of
the entry lines, and a flat section to the rear. This presumably
(MBs aren't my forte) determines the pad the boat plane on. By just
adding a big section in the middle, one will upset that ballance, and
I would want to know that was a good thing before trying it. Ii
would be possible to fair in a section that had some curve and some
flat to it, but that would be significantly more complicated, since
in essence the forward section would be raised, creating structural
and aesthetic dicontinuities.

The other issue on my mind is diplacement, seems like this will add
more diplacement than load. Whether that is true depends on what you
put on board, more people?, but if it is just sleeping quarters, the
boat will probably float a lot higher, relative to the size of the
lower hull. I would just be carefull about that, because presumably
the deadrise is relative to a certain amount of weight, and
particularly if you add a flat mid section, no more motor, or people,
your displacement will go up more than your load, and you may end up
precariously perched on the shoe. Also this displacement fore and
aft will have a significantly different ballance, since 2/3rd of the
boat will now be the flat full dept stuff.

I agree - go for it! Lengthening a boat on the same midsection
usually is an improvement, as jim michalak points out.
I also recall Bolger mentioning (in the discussion of bobcat?), that
"more length would add speed out of proportion to the added cost".
Thats displacement boats, though.

I would tend to agree with this opinion. At the very least, confer
with PB&F before you do any cutting. From my understanding, the
superstructure on Microtrawler is integral to the overall strength of
the hull. Hawkeye, which is a bigger version without superstructure,
has a much stronger series of of web framing in the hull.

"... because the space under the deck is full of web girders needed
to make her stiff on such a light weight. Bottom and deck form a deep
honeycomb sandwich. The 1/2 inch deck feels as solid as a concrete
slab. The Microtrawler design (Chapter 54) shows what can be done by
utilizing the depth of the keelbox and by planning for cabin rather
than deck from the first concept." BWAM page 79

I like the idea! It would be nice to build a Champlain but to make
the MT more useable would be a lot less work and expense. Just a
small suggestion would be to make the new addition slightly lower
than the existing giving a trawler effect and maybe adding a stack to
complete the illusion! Technically the bottom has a flat run where
you would cut so splicing in an 8 foot section shouldn't affect the
sheer line at all. I have had the same idea for the MT should I
build one someday. In the meantime my Sneakeasy is great fun!!

Have you considered selling it and using the money to buy/build a bigger
boat?

Hi Rick, What you have is a nice little Microtrawler. What you propose
is to convert it into a half-assed Champlain. It looks to me like you
will need a new engine too.
Why don't you build a Champlain?

Sawing into an existing boat can be a refreshing exercise:

Splice in an 8' section? Great idea!

Just do it.

MM
Rick, go for it. It might not plane as well when extended without a
bigger motor but the room fishing and sleeping without mosquito's is
more than worth the cost.

I have a Microtrawler that is slightly modified. There is no aft
house, so I have a nice fishing cockpit, and there is a removable
canvas on pipe tent that completely closes in the cockpit when wanted.

The cockpit is great, and I love the pilothouse. What's missing is
something in the middle. My thought this winter is to cut her in half,
and splice in an eight foot section.

Any comments?

I posted a current photo, as she is, and a couple that my kid
stretched on the computer. They are in the photo section of this group
under "MT Stretch".
