Re: 9.9 Yamaha on Micro

Hi Leo,

So that the outboard will not tangle with the rudder I built a fibreglass box outboard mount extension. This moves the outboard about 10 " aft. The fibreglass box has a C channel at the forward end which slips over the original mount then through bolted. This extension also provides support for a small duckboard mounted on the port side. Access is easier through the transom. Works well, only down side is that it moves the motor weight more aft.

I now have some photos which I could mail to you if any use.

Forgot to mention also in my original posting that the 8Hp Yamaha is the High-thrust version with a prop the size of a dinner plate.

I bought my MJ a new 8HP Yamaha 4 stroke for Christmas replacing a 4.5 hp two stroke. Even though the 8 is a lighter than the 9.9 Yamaha and smoooth and quiet, it is still a solid lump to hang off the stern. The boat reachs hull speed at about 1/3 throttle and can now make decent headway when conditions are not ideal with no more than 1/2 power, where as before I'd be stationary, going side ways or backwards. The Yamaha is a long shaft where as the 4.5 was short shaft - I found the boat goes better when the prop remains under water.

Might be worth having a look at the 8 instead of the 9.9 if seriously considering this power for a Micro.

Peter- good points. Question: was it necessary to raise the motor
mount on your MJ to allow the rudder to clear the motor? Any other
ideas? Leo
