Easy to make blocks that you could set up a production line on, and mass
produce.

I have purchased some material from McMaster's to take a shot at setting up a
production line some weekend this winter. They sell UHMW plastic rod and I
will slice pieces off, drill a center hole and put a grove in for sheaves. I
plan on using sheet aluminum cheeks and aluminum tube spacers with pop rivets
holding the whole thing together.

Thanks for the reference Mark. The blocks you refer to are truly
beautiful. I know what you mean, they would look the part. Really,
all the blocks for Navigator are very small, and blocks of that type
may be fiddly and difficult to make in a small size. Time is a major
factor....I have been so busy working that my boatbuilding has
hardly progressed lately. I'm making an all-out effort during the
summer holiday to get her painted and rigged.

Don,
Have you thought of making some of the blocks yourself? A well
written article is in Duckworks Magazine (about 2 lines under your
article) in the 'Articles' section.

I've loooked at the plans I have for the Navigator conversion and you
wouldn't be able to use these for all of the blocks, but you should
be able to use it for some. It could bring the cost down a bit and
would look really good.

PS. Nice looking conversion. I've been waiting for someone to try
the Navigator version.

Hi Peter. I remember you warning us once, about the plethora of gear
required, putting you off the conversion. It's just hitting home to
me now! I was telling Nels, that I had a bucket of surplus gear from
previous projects...........until I started counting yesterday, and
checked on block prices at the marine shops.....phew! Bolger makes
a virtue of eliminating blocks in his designs, but has paid his
pennance to the marine industry in this boat; 35 blocks or turning
devices at last count. I'm sitting here now, considering whether I
really need the reefing system to be controlled from the cabin, for
primarily a daysailer. There is good access from the main and fore-
hatches for reefing activity. That would save 10 devices alone. Can
always add them later.

which he was interested in, and had arranged to see, only to find
the owner had sold it out from under him a few days before, at a
very low price. What a bummer. He sat in the Navigator cabin and was
amazed at the amount of space.
As for sleeping aboard in my driveway, I defer to you Peter, the
master of nocturnal pursuits.

Wow Don,

Thanks for posting the wonderful photos. I am amazed as to how large
it appears and the amount of interior space. With the bow extension
it looks like an entirely different boat.

It is going to be quite an event when she hits the water because
people all over the world are really curious as to how she will
perform. Have you had any problems figuring out the new rig, or is it
fairly straightforward?

Congratulations on the work so far. Happy New Year!

Nels, drooling over the photos on his desktop.
