Re: [bolger] Re: New Marine equiptment from Briggs & Stratton

I've been told these new diesel have pilot injectors. Something to do with
pre-injecting the cyclinder with a tiny charge of fuel prior before hitting
top dead center which does a lot to stop severe vibrations and the reduces
the typical knock that diesels have. It also eliminates the preheaters for
cold starts.

You can really tell a difference when these new diesel running. I've been
around a couple generators running with this new pilot injection system and
they are amazingly quiet.

Jeff
Still no word on transmissions for the Briggs/Daihatsu. Anyone know
of anything?
H.J., from what I have read and made calls on it seems that Briggs
bought patent rights from Daihatsu and are building it to have
interchangeable parts except the fuel pump and injectors that had to
be modified to meet our current EPA standards for them. They claim
they don't vibrate like other diesels and they are much lighter. The
have a good warranty with no mailing around the world for parts.

This looks like a motor for the Pilgrim. How are you going to change
the cabin? I sure would like to see those plans, to bad you live so
far away.

The China Diesels are reliable, the market here is small and based on their
price advantage over more advanced designs. Hardy has been selling them now
for 20-25 years and can provide good support. They have an incredible amount
of iron in them compared to a modern Yanmar or Kubota, they turn slow, and I
assume are no where near as fuel efficient. The Hardy/China diesel and others
like them are what are used throughout Asia and SE Asia for boats, generator
and tractors etc.. Price is part of it, but I suspect that long term
reliability plays a part. An old make or break from Nova Scotia ( I haven't
said the manufacturer because I can't spell Lundenburg) will still run and
you can almost carve out parts for it from blocks of brass or Iron. I think
those old fashioned diesels used in Asia are like that, mass is substituted
for technology to achieve reliability.

John, is the Brigs and Stratton Vanguard manufactured by them or are they
just resellers? If resellers, who makes it?

Awesome!

I had a set of study plans for years drooling on them. I went with the Wyo
for draft and speed but I really like the Pilgram. If he'd had the outboard
version ready before I committed to the Wyo, just maybe.....

Thats why I have been looking at the China Diesels and the Vanguard.

Can anyone help with a URL for a transmission that would work with
this Vanguard diesel?

Any thoughts on making the cooling work in a boat? The radiator
would work OK on a boat?

China motor makes me nervous... but any other choices come to mind?

Bryan
seattle
HJ, I found a couple of places in boats and harbors that have
rebuilt trans in that price range in just about any ratio that would
work with 31 H.P. These are 3 cylinders and come with everything
including a radiator. They claim they are smooth but I haven't set a
coffee cup on top of one yet. I can't abide by using a china diesel
but if you use the Caterpillar lock tight nothing will come loose and
that is a promise.

The Vanguard also has a much better warranty and parts availability
than the china diesel. I'll bet they are more fuel efficient also. I
keep looking at a Pilgrim and for the price of 31 H.P. and a sail
backup I could cruise the west coast fairly inexpensivly(fish taco's
anyone).

My understanding is that short of mechanical locks nothing stops the thing
from shaking apart. Most tried LockTite to no avail. To much shaken goin
on!

After doing some research earlier on the China Diesels I found that most
owners generally like them other than the fact that they are of an ancient
design and shake like crazy. You absolutely have to check the nuts and
bolts everywhere on the engine and tranny almost weekly or they'll shake
apart. Lot's of China diesels have self destructed when an injector, head
bolt, etc. has loosened. Not really an issue on the internal parts but it's
the external accessory stuff.

Also, they say to change the oil often. The old design has a lot of ring
bypass in it and the oil gets rank fast. No unlike any of the older diesels
of any make.

If you can handle the vibration and are willing to keep an close eye on the
bolts and such, they are a decent setup, generally long lived and easy on
the pocket book.

I had been looking at the Vanguard for a while. I have also been looking at
the Hatz aircooled deisel.

Can you give a little more info on transmission sources? Cheapest I have
found was over $500 for a manual.

Another cheap deisel is the china diesel at

http://www.hardydiesel.com/mrn/Index.htm

$2,500 for a 25hp diesel with transmision , heat exchanger and instruments
plus free shipping. Not a light wieght at 1,000 lbs. There also might be
slave labor issues, though you can't question that if you are wearing Nike's.

Hmm. Air cooled, judging by the guard rail/bar.

"designed for fresh water use"

I was looking today for the best price on a Vanguard B&S diesel
engine and noticed that they have upgraded from 26.5 to 31 H.P. self
contained unit with radiator and ready to run. The lowest price now
is $2,312.95 plus shipping. A transmission will run about $250 more
from a discount marine supply house. They also have a 23.5 H.P. model
for slightly less money but the same weight.

Briggs & Stratton has also come out with a new 4 cycle 5 H.P.
outboard motor that has forward and reverse plus a 3 gallon stand
alone fuel tank. They are claiming it to be a very low cost
alternative to import engines with low noise and low vibration. It
sounds like a perfect low cost kicker motor for states that are
demanding the use of cleaner 4 cycle outboards.

All of these can be seen at
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/bpp_splash.asp

Go to the north American site then to new products for the outboard.
The diesel engine can be found under Briggs & Stratton Engines/
Search by brand/ Vanguard. I found the 2312.95 figure for the diesel
by searching prices on the web. I haven't been able yet to find a
price on the outboard but I'm sure it will be about 1/3 of what a
Honda costs(my favorite). Briggs and Stratton engines are easy to
work on and almost everyone owns one who has a lawn mower. The Diesel
I think is a Daihatsu 3 cylinder sold and by warranted B&S. It should
give excellent fuel economy and heater hoses can be run from it's
closed system for warming the cabin.
