Re: 'Caer' Free
I can't believe I clicked send before I typed anything, some
webmaster, eh!
From your list I'd say Cabin Clam Skiff and Red Wing have far more
appeal and class, IMHO.
If you find your way east after the thaw and before the freeze up, a
bare 12 weeks, brrrr . . . give me a call and I'll stand you to a
flagon of ale and a bucket of boat building lies.
Keep up the good work.

I sure hope to travel and boat Down South, too. First I need a little
more building experience and then I must decide between Cabin Clam
Skiff, Sow's Ear, Red Wing, Shanteuse... those are some of the
leading contenders.
Meanwhile, we have family in Ontario and maybe we'll make it over
your way some day. We spent time on the Trent-Severn Waterway a few
years ago and have a hankering to 'do' the Rideau.

I'm jealous John,
Canadian boating in February? I have to cartop my Pirogue to Texas
just to find some soft water and warm air. Got to meet Chuck of
Duckworks, and sleep in a motel adjacent to an aircraft carrier in
Corpus Cristi bay, so it was all worth the 4 day drive, ....
but I'm still jealous.

Hi, all
What a beautiful day we're having in Victoria -- officially 8 deg.
C/47 deg. F but so warm in the sun I very comfortably did some
varnishing in shirt sleeves. Wind was 11 km/hr., again officially,
but here on Portage Inlet it gusted up and down and around and about.
With a neap tide, what made this morning especially memorable was
that I sailed my newly rigged Surf for the first time -- and all went
quite well. Spent about an hour and a half out there in the sunshine,
getting a feel for the boat. It was great!
I'm glad I built Michalak-style pivoting leeboard and kick-up rudder
because I scraped bottom a few times at the top of Portage
Inlet, where it's especially shallow. Returning upwind back up the
narrow-and-shallow channel to our dock, I adjusted the leeboard to
about 1/3 maximum depth; I noticed leeward splippage but I made a
great impression on my wife by coming all the way in without having
to reach for my paddle!
A pair of mute swans have returned to our end of Portage Inlet this
winter and I that has inspired me to choose a new name for my
Surf: 'Caer', after the Swan maiden of Celtic mythology.
The 'bowsprit' kind of leads forward like a swan's neck and head. I
know, a Surf isn't a Micro or whatever, but it looks nice and seems
to sails fine -- and I'm happy. Cigar anyone?
:^)
