Hmmm! Loosemoose says he would only advise his worst enemy to mix sand into
the paint, but you seem to have had relatively satisfactory results.

**** It seemed to work OK, but if doing it again, I'd probably paint (or epoxy)
then sprinkle the sand using a salt shaker or something...

Is the variation in sand quantities enough to make the surface treacherous
in that footing varies considerably from one area to another, or is this just an
aesthetic issue? (in my application, the decks/soles are all underfoot and
well below the sheer of this powerboat, so aesthetics are not a major issue).

****** Just an aesthetic issue. Very effective non-skid, but a little rough
on the knees when crawling around. Maybe a couple more coats of just paint will
dull it a little. I purchased from Osh hardware, I think a pint for $3 or
something (which seemed a ridiculous price for sand), but it was exceptionally
uniform, and small, so was probably better than generic sand.

Did you apply with brush or roller?

**** Roller.

Or did you spray? Do you think that the
variation was due to the problem of keeping the sand uniformly mixed in the
paint? Or was it an artifact of the application technique?

***** I think the variation was that I poured some paint/sand mix on, then
rolled out. So where I poured, more sand was concentrated in that area. Poor
lighting and a bright white paint also made it harder to tell until it set.

What kind of deck paint did you use?

***** I painted the whole thing with Home Depot Behr Latex house paint. I wasn't too
happy with the properties of that paint, particularly the coverage, wouldn't use
it again.

Also, I'd suggest masking around the edges and stuff. I used 2" blue masking tape,
and cut rounded corners inside and outside, and it really made the whole thing look
very professional. Easy to do, too.
