Re: [bolger] Re: Asking questions

HI Don, I thought it had a box keel in the drawings.
I'll have to see if I can find the drawings again and
look at it again.

I came across two reffrance to the Yawlboat #651 she
is 12'2" x 6'3" X 12". And that would fit what I was
seeing on the drawings.

Harry,
No, that's the original one. Then there were 2 versions of the 23 footer. In bolger 2 files under Bolger scans I think, there is a Bolger drawing of 2 versions showing the dipper, single leeboard, and single rudder on one, and a Gaff/jib, dual leeboard and dual rudders on the other. I am interested in seeing inside that newer version. Well, I'm also interested in hearing from the man (or woman)! It was good to hear about the wrapping up of the Navy work. I wonder if we will ever see pictures of that. There were some other Seal boat photos in one of the Bolger groups file sections but I don't think they were related, or even of Bolger design. Think they just looked like Sneakeasy.

Sincerely,
Gene T.

Is this the other FMS link you are looking for? Down the page a bit.

Don,
I think I have seen all the easy to find photo's of FMS. I'm biding my time until I get a reply from PB&F. I did send a second letter with a few more questions after 1 month but I will be patient. Its not like I am in a rush to start building. I also have 2 photos of the boat sailing with a rubber dingy hanging high on the back. Poor quality but proof it sails, with the dipper. I am interested in what can be done with the inside. Since the floor slopes on the sides unlike the step sharpies, one can only walk in the center isle. Also, on the original lugger, the seating is low relative to the glass so sitting you don't have a view. And I'd also like an indoor pilot seat. So there needs to be some rearranging but I couldn't visualize what might work without the shell to start with! This one could be a keeper as far as plans go.

Sincerely,
Gene T.

I a bit more enthusiastic about FMS's overall performance, but Bruce
is much more experienced than I.

Here is a link to a nice looking FMS webpage.

There are also pics of another one under sail but I don't have the
link. IMO is is a fine camp cruiser for 2 with a great range of
capability. It appears you are looking at 100hp + to get the kind of
power perfomance demonstrated on the weblink above. If you afford,
say a 115hp OB, you might as well stay at about 18hp, and run
displacement speeds. 18 would be more than you need for that but it
would be good to have when bucking a headwind. Heck, 25hp probably
makes sense, given the windage of the bulky FMS.

Good Morning Kristine,

That appears to be a Fast Brick, serving as a dingy.

http://www.kolbsadventures.com/fastbrick_1.htm

The Fast Brick is a brick variant designed for outboard power and
planing. A forerunner would be the Skimmer, another Bolger design,
plans sold by Payson.

You thought Watervan because you could see the front of the cutwater,
but it is not a full box keel, like Watervan, Hawkeye, Microtrawler,
and Bee.

Don Schultz
Good morning to all. If it's morning when you read
this.

I was looking around the web...Yes I know a bad habit.

Anyway I found some drawings of a Bolger design called
the Puffer and on the stern of the profile view is a
skiff that looks like a Watervan with no top and maybe
10 to 12 feet long. I couldn't read the name that was
in the drawing that was given to the skiff.

My question is, is it in fact what I'm seeing and did
Phil make up drawing/plans for the skiff?

I know I'm being a bit of a pest. But the only dumb
question is the one that is never asked.

I hope every ones day is going well, and enjoying it.

Blessings Kristine

Bruce,
I'm awaiting a reply from PB&F about the FMS or similar plans. It has
been a while (3 weeks) so I've been mining the archives. It's dusty
down here. I've seen the photo of the twin rudder gaff version but
have no idea how the interior has been improved, which I feel it
needs. Could I possibly trouble you for a peek at the write up you
referenced here, or dates of MAIB articles. There is a big gap in my
subscription and all thiss stuff falls in my dead zone. Thanks.

The article in MAIB (you really should subscribe, it's a superb
boating rag at a great price) says performance is good. Although what
that means for a MS is questionable. All MS's are poorish sailors and
poorish powerboats, as with any compromise. Keep in mind that this
type of step sharpie hull only has the narrow centre line hull fully
in the water, the elevated bottom actually acting more like a
bouyancy sponson.

It says you can shut down the engine and run or reach silently, yet
have the option at moving into the wind at 20 knots plus. Not a bad
level of compromise for a MS.

Bruce Hector
Hi

Thanks very much for posting the scan.

This boat has no stern rocker, so wouldn't it drag a lot of water at
displacement speeds, and hence be a poor sailor?

Hi Daniel,

Here thry are with my compliments. I put them in the files section of
the Bolger2 egroup, in a folder named "Bolger Scans:, file is named

Basically he went to dual rudders, shallower set of leeboards, and
changed the rig to a gaff sloop. All with good reason in the text.

If you like I'll scan the text and email it to you. Scanned large
enough to read it would take up too much storage space on the group.
