Re: Birch Ply

built my zephyr from very nice finnish birch ply - lots of thin veneers
- but it doesnt hold up at all. after *weeks* in the open the
painted+sun-exposed areas had checked and were covered with
little black fungus dots. acrylic paint came off quick. i dont paint
the bottom any more, its not worth it. the sides (less sun) are
holding up much better. polyester-soaked areas around the butt
joints are still looking o.k.

i am not very happy about it, but unfortunately it is the only
waterproof ply i can get around here (landlocked austria)

p.s. a boatbuilder friend of mine surveyed a russian cat from birch
ply, and it was really "rotten to the core" under the water line. he
commented on the low rot resistance of birch.
Or you could just seal it .

Click on my yahoo name see that picture in profile that board! Its 2
pieces of birch laminated with epoxy one coat of epoxy and 3 coats
of varnish. Not beating my chest to much but i have three other
boards built out of baltic birch that get punished none have
delaminated as of yet but there sealed. The birch at my lumber yard
says interior use so its a pretty good guess it doesn't have
exterior glue. I like it though its the most solid local ply I can
get at a great price. So I think for small application sealing it
with epoxy then painting it is still cost effective. But then again
I'd run out of food before I'd run out of epoxy if it wasn't for my
wife.

I'd seal it then paint it even still.

There are 7 plys in this 3/4 inch plywood. No mushy stuff in
middle. It is really nice stuff to work with.

I'd seal it with two coats of epoxy. Then paint it. I have used
baltic birch 1/8''(3 ply) and 1/4''(5ply) in marine applications
glassed and nonglassed but all where coated in epoxy. No checking or
delams, as of yet. How main plys are in that 3/4''. Some of that
birch I found at those H/D stores where just thin vaneers of birch
ontop of a mushy core material in center.

All the birch ply I've ever found at HD did not have waterproof glue. Have you tested yours?

The good news is that it probably won't check if it doesn't delaminate. There's been a piece sitting out in my yard for about six or seven years, more or less covered but still exposed to the elements. It's proected only with paint. Water has caused quite a bit of delamination around the edges, but there isn't any checking.
