Re: [bolger] Re: Topaz sailing version?
Bruce,
Lapstrake, while beautiful, is more work that I'm willing to put into it.

Thanks,
I had considered the "Glass House" Chebacco a while ago, but declined as
it's too small for what I wanted. The 25' version was lapstrake and no
house when I looked. I'll have to re-visit that one, and see what I can
find on Red Zinger. Birdwatcher is similar to what I sail now, I want to
get up off the floor in the future. Not getting any younger and I see
where I'm headed, so real seats and a bunk are high priorities.
Today I sent for the Jochems video to see what it reveals about bow
slap, and asked about modifications.
Thanks for the suggestions

A couple of other boats to consider, though perhaps out of the
size/performance/feature envelope you have in mind:
Chebacco glass-house version, aka Chebacco motorsailer, aka Chebacco
shelter house version. Smaller than you want, but along the right
lines, I think.
Red Zinger. About the right size, and intended for the crew to be
happy inside while under sail. You could ask PCB about having a glass
house.
I suppose you also ask PCB about adapting his anti-noise features to
Birdwatcher or the Jochems.

I should have looked at the pictures again before I posted
instead of after. Fast Motorsailor is a step sharpie, not a Topaz
style V-bow.

I don't know of anything trailable matching the Topaz interior (full
headroom, and glass house style) with sails. The BirdWatcher
& WhaleWatcher give you the glasshouse (and headroom by
virtue of the open center cabin top). They both have a flat bottom
which will pound in a chop. The Fast Motorsailor comes the
closest in my mind. It doesn't have all the interior amenities, but
you said, "...around 25 feet." You just can't expect to match the
interior of the 31' Topaz in a 6' shorter boat . Plus, when sailing,
you generally need to be out in a decent size cockpit. This
means less of the boat is available for the cabin. The improved
Fast Motorsailor with the Topaz style V-bow, "Chinese Gaff", twin
rudders, improved helm location, and a fair amount of window
area looks like a winner. Imagine, decent sail performance in a
20+ knot trailable power boat.

Peter,
I guess I should have struck the word "hull" from my sentence. You're
right it's the topsides and interior, plust the cutwater bow. Vince is
on to me with the Fuji, in that I'm looking for a smaller, trailerable,
much, much simplified version of Fiji. That's where the Topaz reference
comes to my mind. It seems like Topaz is a basic interior. Jochems is
probably the closest but I'm intimidated by the rig, and comcerned with
the bow/cutwater of Jochems (I have a Microtrawler and have just about
had it with the bow noise), Topaz seems to have improved on that.
Guess I'll need to see the Jochems video.

The most obvious suggestion is the Jochems schooner which has the
glass house. A more glorious boat, also with the Birdwatcher-inspired
arrangement, is Berengaria. That's about 32', strip planked.
A strict answer to your question would be "no" because Topaz has a
planning powerboat hull which would not sail well. But I don't sense
you are talking about the details of the bottom shape, but about the
topside appearance.
Peter
Thanks Vince, but I was thinking in the 25 foot trailerable range.
