Re: re:rookie looking for info on Pointy Skiff

I use a longshaft 4hp Johnson on mine in the larger bodies of water,
and a Minkota electric in the smaller ponds and lakes. I have had my
Pointy Skiff for 12 years now and it is the most used boat in my
fleet as it is easily cartoppable and will take Dad and 2 kids out
fishing for the day. I used 1/4 luan, which has finally started to
disintegrate. I fix the questionable spots with and epoxy/glass
sandwich and prayer.

I am currently thinking of building a small tortoise to row to the
mooring where my new catboat will be at. I am looking for the
smallest, lightest, cheapest craft to accompish the job.

I had a 3HP on mine with no problems. No one says that if you have
more HP that you have to use it. The best part of the PS is the
simplicity of building. Yes, it is stable enough given the right
weather conditions.

Right.

Which makes me think of another one CanadianFishingGuy might look at that Jim describes as
the, "Perfect back of the pickup truck boat."
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/store/plans/jim/jon_jr/index.htm

That would be a more stable boat than QT I believe, if somewhat less able in rough water,
and the power range is right.

Actually kneeling on the sole between the aft and mid seats. The aft
seat is too far back, but it's to far to reach the motor controls from
the mid seat. I was alone, and assume a passenger up front would keep
the bow down, but feel the stern would still squat.

The QT pwr is about the same weight right?, and only 2 1/2' of pointy
end longer. Pointy Skiff sticks out the end of the pick-up anyway, so
not much harm in a bit more unless at home storage length is a problem.

What a stunt!
I'm guessing you were sitting right aft, all by yourself?
Looking at the book, Payson recommends 2 -3 hp.

The QT _is_ a lot more able, if not quite so compact.

Pointy Skiff has everything on your wish list except it has too much
rocker for a 4 horse. I put a friends 4 hp on my Pointy Skiff and
anything over 1/4 throttle sucked the stern down, raised the bow several
feet and drug half the lake behind me with no real speed increase.

So you might want to consider a smaller outboard or a different boat
with less rocker. Maybe Michalak's QT Power Skiff?

And yes, you can build the Pointy Skiff with what's in "Build the New
Instant Boats".

You'd be hard pressed to improve upon it.
Mark
Hello all,

I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me that
I have regarding the Pointy Skiff.

Is the Pointy Skiff a stable boat? I am looking to use it during
the hunting and fishing season on small bodies of water.

I am looking for a boat that is fairly light, fit in the back of my
truck, easy to build and most of all stable. It would also have to
accommodate my 4 hp outboard

Is the Pointy Skiff the boat I should be considering???

Should I get the "Build the new Instant Boats" book?

All of your comments and suggestion are greatly appreciated.
