Re: Go Build Your Own Book Find!

I love going to this book store. You never know what you'll find. I
only get there about 4-5 times a year and end up spending a small
fortune every time (with the exception of this time). Your anology is
right on the mark. I've read some of Hemmingway. Great stories, just
like these two guys have great boats. Funny thing is that I thought I
struck out finding anything and then wham! there it was. I've been
doing searches on ebay for a few months trying to find this book.
Just was in the right place at the right time.

The excitement from a book-collecting point of view is that this
seems to be an inscription from one famous boat-building author to
another famous boat-building author. This assumes that the the 'Bob
Steward' mentioned is the author of the 'The Boatbuilding Manual.'
which seems likely on the face of it.

It's the difference between finding a copy of "The Great Gatsby"
inscribed by Fitzgerald, and finding a copy inscribed by Fitzgerald
to Hemmingway. (Probably the first time Steward has been compared to
Hemmingway)

Sorry,
it is signed HH "Dynamite" Payson. Here is what he wrote;

To Bob Steward
With much thanks for mention in your book. I can see now why it sells
forever. I sure wish I had it when I started in. You will see what a
novice was up against when you read this one.
H.H. "Dynamite" Payson

Humble man. I talked with him on the phone when I was building the
Nymph. Great guy. I would love to spend a summer as his apprentice.

Not only is the autograph authentic
but so is the man.

He autographed my book too, which I bought
by calling him on the telephone. That was
ten years ago, so I don't remember all the
details, but I do remember him leaving the
impression on me that he was a genuine nice
guy.

The copy of "Instant Boats" I bought from Payson was inscribed:

"Happiness is building your own boat. H.H. Dynamite Payson"

No doubt yours is authentic.

I'm busting with joy here!! I found Paysons book "Go Build Your Own
Boat" in the local used book store. On the inside cover is a personal
note to Bob Steward and it is signed Harold "Dynamite" Payson.
I snagged it up, but wonder if this is a real autographed copy?
Anyone else have Dynamites autograph to compare it with?
