RE: [bolger] Swallow & Amazons
Secret Water has always been my favourite. I had a bow and arrow set
hanging on the wall and all the arrows had a squiggley line with "eels
forever" written on them. I think I was in love with Capt Nancy Blackett
when I was 14 yrs old.The magic of the series is that (with the exception
of Peter Duck and Missee Lee) ordinary events are such great adventures.

I read the series to my daughter when she was 4/5 years old. We found
Peter Duck quite violent & disturbing; it was hard to remember that it was
just a fantasy, dreamed up by the kids. I still haven't read her Missee
Lee; the deal was she could read it herself, someday. She can read now, so
it may be soon.
My vote for the best of the series is "We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea". OK,
the happy coincidence at the end was a bit much, but it didn't detract from
the hero's accomplishment - all in all, a great sea tale - gripping on a par
with O'Brien's "Desolation Island".
Curtis
(always happy to plug my favorite authors -- Bolger content? It's
impossible to understand PCB without reading Ransome)

favorite so far, although I have to admit I found it bit tense for what I
had been reading Ransome for.
