Re: [bolger] Re: Raka Slow on a Cold Day?

I've used the RAKA in all kinds of weather. When the molecules get a chance (temperature) they will link and all will be well. I have had to wait through freezing nights sometimes but it all went together and is functioning.

Not to avoid the more abstract elements of the question -- but it
looks like Tuesday (tomorrow) will go into the 60s and 70s here in
the Catskills. Probably the same near you in Montauk. I'm scrambling
to finish frames for two Mouseboats so I can tape the seams tomorrow
when the sun shines. Then we go back into the 40s. I think this
frantic on-again-off-again spring construction after a long winter is
one of the great joys of boatbuilding.

all best,
Garth

I, too, have used lots of Raka slow hardener in these temps
(northern Michigan). It will cure eventually. Can you make a tent
of polyethylene over the work and put a couple of lamps inside?
If you can keep it above 40 degrees F. it shouldn't take over 24
hours to get past tacky. warming the wood with a heat gun or hair
dryer before glueing should help, too. I've used a kerosene
salamander a couple of times, but the fumes were just too
noxious.

Sure, I've done a lot of epoxy work in those conditions. It'll take days to
harden and possibly a week to a full set so it won't gum up your sand paper
but it will harden without adverse results. I've even had if freeze and
once it warmed up, it started setting. It sure makes boat building slow but
it does work, at least in my experience.

I like to coat my plywood on evening when nights get under 60 degrees with
the slow hardener. No out gassing, deep penetration, etc. I just add a
slight bit of de-natured alcohol for thinning.

Did this several times with Raka Very Slow Hardener last year, in
similar conditions. Yes, it did kick reliably, but took several days
to a week to cure to non-sticky, no idea how long to complete cure.

Why not have them deliver by two-day-air-freight (if epoxy can be
sent that way) a 2-qt bottle of fast hardener to you? You will get
done with the project more quickly that way, even with the shipping
delay. Raka is very flexible about orders of this sort.

I used raka slow hardener under similar conditions this week for concrete anchor pins. It can remain tacky for several
days but it will eventually harden. Reasonable strength may not be attained for a few weeks though.

Fellows,

I've got some staves ripped that I'd like to spring onto a dory hull
I laid up last Fall. Trouble is, all I've got is Raka slow hardener.
We're getting highs into the 50s with 30s/40s overnight.

Does anyone know if Raka slow will harden under these conditions? I
don't mind if it takes a long time. I do mind if it doesn't kick.

Yes, I'm going to ask them too.
