Gypsy hull? If not dead set, maybe a Surf or a Zephyr would give you
an easier platform for experimentation?
Just a thought. What ever you end up doing, take pictures and good luck!

A Windsprint rig can drop right in place of the 59 sq. ft. leg o'mutton on
Gypsy without moving any of the elements of the rig. The centers of area of
both sails are in the same fore and aft plane. You'd need a heavier mast for
the 115 sq. ft. balanced lug, but it'd theoretically work. In practice it
may be too powerful for Gypsy's narrow hull.

| Your mention of the Windsprints makes me wonder if going to a
| balanced lug on a Gypsy would be an easy way to gain sail area in
| equal measure fore and aft of the CLR without going to a stayed mast?
| Of course, that doesn't make a sloop. . . . but it sure would go fast.

All best,

I assume by sloop you mean with a jib (?). I've considered this as well with
both Gypsy and June Bug. What stops me is the need of a fore stay, which in
turns requires a back stay. Last summer I had some success with a Tyvek 72
sq. ft. sprit rig with sprit boom. I built too much camber into it, so it
looked like a big baggy advertisement for 3 M Corp. But the Gypsy handled
the extra sail with no trouble and we gave the Wind Sprints at the Mahone
Bay Wooden Boat Festival races a run for their money. The shorter, stouter
mast would probably take a fore stay without the need of counter pull from
aft. At any rate all the best with your experiments. Let us know how it
goes.
