Re: Are there any photos of Diablo Grande on the net?
My first projects were the simultaneous construction of a Nymph and a
Diablo. These were the first things I'd built since a doghouse in
grade nine, lo, those many years ago.
I actually had more trouble with the Nymph. It has pretty extreme
rocker for so short a hull and the 1/4" frames were soooo flimsy. I
despaired of my carpentry skills when I first saw those gaping seams
I could put my hand in. Thank goodness for West system and its
ability to fill huge gaps, and still be strong.
Conversley, the Diablo went together with no fuss. We barely needed a
Spanish Windlass to pull in the bow planks. Both boats turned out
safe and solid, so much so that I now lament at not springing for
good Marine plywood. The cheap stuff just doesn't last. Now I'm
spending three times as much money and time keeping the cheap,
mystery meat filling, 3 ply mahogany stuff together than the Marine
would have cost in the first place.
So, yep, I do believe a beginner can build a Diablo Drande. Read
everything about building a Diablo several times, especially The New
Instant Boats by Dynamite Payson, and have at her.

Jonathan,
Yours is the hardest question in amateur boatbuilding. Not all novices are created equal.
Some can do a fifty footer first time out; others struggle with that 8 foot dink.
As you can see from Ian's photos, DG is a substantial project. Step by step, truly almost
anyone can do it, if their time. But there is a lot of expense, tape, resin, filler,
grinding off and cleaning up involved. Some folks like the work; others swear to, "Never again."
The best advice I've heard is to start with something small to get the hang of it. You'll
always find a use for the little one -or they make great gifts.

I made a Diablo Grande folder in photos for you. They are the only
photos I know of.

I am thinking of building a Diablo Grande. I have never built a boat
before and would like to see some photos of a finished diablo
grande. I has found many photos of the diablo. Is the Grande going
to be to hard for a novice?
