Re: Enlarging plans from payson's book

I've both bought plans and built from Payson's book. I don't think it
is too big a deal either way. My first two boats, a Gypsy and a
Chebacco I bought the plans (as well as the sails) from Mr. Payson.
My Nymph I built from the book as I had no question about being able
to do so. For a first time builder or for the more elaborate boats I
think the plans are well worth the money spent and the eyestrain
avoided. Good luck.

I built the Nymph from the book, and I don't feel bad about it at
all. Payson mentions in the book that you could build from the book,
and simply indicates that most would prefer the plans (easier to
read).

If they didn't want you to build from the book, they could have left
out key dimensions.

As to practicality, If you don't mind being patient and careful, it
ought to work fine. I was patient and careful in doing my layouts,
and the boat went together just like it was supposed to.

Andy, I can't see any reason for this having a moral side.
Payson published a book of boat plans you can build, and you paid
him for that right when you bought it. (the only reason he suggests
in the frontespiece for buying the plan, is if you want to scale
from the plans)
Whether Payson is cuddly or not, as some suggest, I don't see it has
any relevance.
If the book was a catalogue of plans, that would be a different
matter.
It would be sad if anyone felt guilt after building from the book.

I called Payson once and mentioned that a couple of measurements were missing in his book. He replied, "If I put the measurements all in I wouldn't be able to sell the plans." I sent for the plans. He's a kind and gentle person.

I like paying for the plans since it encourages designers to design more boats.

Reed
As I remember them, every Payson book said you could build from the book.
Suggested it might be easier to order the plans, but it wasn't necessary.
Don't see any moral dilemma there. OTOH, I bought plans for the Teal when I
was contemplation building one.

You won't be able to get them to any scale (or, at least, it's not
worth the effort). Enlarge them as much as practical and determine
the scale you got from any dimension. Use simple proportations to
scale any other dimensions you want.

The book shows full plans, schedule of materials, full building
instructions, and is clearly intended to be built from.
I don't know why one would need to purchase larger copies, because

They don't discourage you from building straight from the book. I
think right or wrong doesn't belong in this discusion. The plans
aren't full size or anything, you still have to expand and fair the
shapes onto the panels. There isn't any information witheld on the
plans in the book. I can see the numbers clearly enough, there is
one panel that you have to discover for yourself whichever way you
build.
First, I agree with the other posts, spring for the plans. It is
better to build from a good set of plans.

OTOH I built most of my boats from enlargements from the books. Scale
is unimportant. Just blow them up until you can read the numbers for
the layouts. LAyout the panels and frames, and have at 'em.

Bruce Hector
http://www.brucesboats.com
Anything you enlarge on a photocopier will not be
consistent and will be no good for taking off
measurements. Photocopiers are NOT accurate enough and
they actually can distort the image.

Get the plans. You won't regret it.

It's the right thing to do, and it'll save you a lot of hassle.

Take an architects scale with you to the copy center. Play with the
enlarging ratio until it matches a convenient scale on the rule.

I have the paysons book the new instant boat and want to build diablo
from the plans provided. What diminsions should I have them blown up
to so that they will be to scale? I also thought about blowing a
copy up to larger that scla to make the model. Is this a bad idea.
Also, thanks to everyone for responding to my other post it really
helped me.
