promoting "build it yourself"

Anybody in Pacific NW willing to display their owner-built sailboat
(finished, or --even better -- in-progress) at upcoming "Sailfest" at
Seattle Boatshow this Sept 10-14 (soutn end of Lake Union)?

Maybe also be on-hand some or all of the time to discuss the joys and
pitfalls of owner-building.......

If you're interested, contact me.

REASON: NW new-boat dealers and used boat brokers have (suddenly) realized
that the cadre of sailors on Puget Sound has actually SHRUNK -- fewer active
sailors now than in 1980! --- rather than all of us (boat-salesmen)
nibbling at each other's piece of the pie, maybe it makes more sense to
ENLARGE the whole pie altogether, by bringing in "new blood" to the sport.
Thus, activities are recently underway (supported by the two organizations
representing new boat dealers and used boat brokers) for supporting local
youth-sailing programs, H.S. teams, etc...advertising "boats-for-rent"
places and membership sailing clubs.... promoting "outward-bound" - type
boating programs.... and ANY other way to get people out on sailboats! --
including especially making public realize ya don't hafta spend $100k to "go
sailing"....

I'm on this committee of the Northwest Yacht Brokers' Assn to "grow"
sailing... thus am in a position to help spread the gospel of "build yer
own", and even (TRY TO) give all of us bolgerites a bit of a pulpit to
preach to the unwashed who haven't seen the light yet.... This effort is,
of course, somewhat self-serving: Sure makes sense to me for my professional
brokerage "career": eventually most boat owners "move up".

By the way, Northwesties, keep yer eyes peeled for further promo releases
about this upcoming "Sailfest" show: we're also organizing quite a roster
of interesting sail-oriented SEMINARS by both local and national experts
and/or sailing-celebrities -- should be informative, might even be fun...
