[bolger] PL Premium & Polyurethanes

Re: Robert Lundy's comment on Pl Premium:

I am indeed a big fan of PL Premium Polyurethane CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE
(thick cheap thick green goo that comes in a red and yellow caulking tube).
I used it on my Sneakeasy in a few places, but mostly used epoxy on
Sneakeasy.

Herb McCleod has a longer track record than I do with the stuff and it
sounds like he is also much enamored of it. It cures in cold temperatures
too. The CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE only puffs up a very modest amount while
curing, maybe 10% in volume.

However, do NOT confuse PL Premium Polyurethane CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE with
the liquid polyurethane glue also labeled "PL-Premium"!! That liquid glue
product is another of the foaming liquid glue products of which "Gorilla
Glue" is the best known. I've had very good luck with those too, but the
liquid polyurethanes are vastly different than the CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE.
Yes the liquid glues DO foam out, dramatically more than PL CONSTRUCTION
ADHESIVE (maybe 400% expansion?).

PL CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE is a bit thick for laminating panels...if used for
butt blocks spread it very carefully to avoid voids - I've found a notched
trowel helps a lot. It would not be my first choice for butt blocks.

I also once experimentally used PL CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE to make chine
fillets in a stitch and glue canoe. Pressed glass tape into the still-soft
PL, and epoxied over the works. I'm sure it is not as strong as epoxy
fillets, but probably strong enough, and it is VERY fast to apply! My
experiment is still holding up fine - just paddled her out to an island
here last Saturday in fact, but I'll reserve judgement on that method until
some more experimenting.
