Re: [bolger] Black Skimmer Displacement

Thanks for the info. Do you have any pictures? I don't suppose your boat
is the one pictured on Payson's web site. That one has a very nice
looking sail.

Sorry all, I missed the group's discussion a few days back on actual
displacement of Black Skimmer -- here's a topic where I can spoutoff
AUTHORITATIVELY, as I own a Black Skimmer, and have exact weight from
scales:
mine weighs 2700 lbs accurate to within 100 lbs.
Includes boat, leeboards, masts, yards and sails, 4.5hp wo-cylinder Johnson
long-shaft outboard, gp 27 battery, full floorboards as specified, foam
berth cushions, but not all weekend camping gear.
This falls in-line with two other "published" weights:
Payson's site claims "load displacement" of 2800 lbs, but he also claims
ballast at only 500, I'm sure mine was closer to 700 lbs when I pulled it
out for sandblastig & re-painting
Mike O'Brien's article in issue #one of his magazine "boat design quarterly"
(he should know the boat _ i understand bolger designed it for him when he
was still editor of wooden boat) states a displacement of twenty_four
hundred pounds (sorry my kyeboard just lost numbers!)
someday i"ll post the details of the tabernackle i built of misc galv steel
trailer_roller supports (never could find a company to galvanize anything
i"d have welded up) all these parts strapped together with hose_clamps
has worked perfectly for well on a dozen years and yes the as_designed
length of the mast overhangs wildly when trtailering and is a b____ to raise
but hey that sliding gunter rig never looks like it would set worth beans
mine sets beuatifully as it well should it"s the mast and mainsail of
richard zapf"s "red zinger" see chapter on her in bwoam how that
boat finally "came alive" when sail was properly cut to the taper of the
mast
