RE: Dyeing Dacron sails

This gives me an idea. What about iron oxide (rust)? I seem to recall
rust stains don't come out easily at all, so what about some inductrial
source of the stuff finely ground and applied on purpose? Would take
some investigation but I bet there's a way to make it work well.

Model airplane guys sometimes boil polyester (Dacron is a form of
polyester) film and other plastics in a Rit dye solution to get colors.
However, I've noticed that Rit fades pretty easily. Recommend if you do
this that you first boil a precisely measured 10" square of the same
material and see if it shrinks very much.
Bruce, in my experienced and expert opinion the very best way to make your
sails tanbark is to fervently wish as hard as you can that they remain a
snowy and pristine white. This time-tested technique will guarantee a
lovely and rich color change in no time flat. In my case, it has rendered
my Yankee a subtle green...

Sorry, I've got no advice on dying TYVEK, except to say if you're
going to over-dye the blue print, I think you should use navy blue.
Nothing else (except black) would have a chance of hiding the print.
If it really will come off with alcohol or another solvent, that's a
different matter.

But, back to my subject. Can I dye my Micros (plural) Dacron sails
tanbark? How? Boil them in coffee? Hot chocolate? Brown printer's ink?

Suggetsions welcome and encourgaed.

Hi Bruce,

I know nothin' 'bout dyin'.....But I once had a complete set of
sails made for my Elver by a nice sail maker in Kingston. His name is
Andrew Soper, and he was very knowledgable about all things to do with
fabrics and sails.
Perhaps, just maybe, you could trade in your white sails against
the purchase of a "tanbark" set? OR ask Andrew about fabric
options,it is surprising the range of prices available. My Elver
sails, which were synthetic, were dark brown and felt just like canvas
while being a whole lot cheaper then the white sailmakers dacron.
A final possiblility may be to just buy a bolt of brown
polyester from Andrew and stitch up your own set.Think of the many
fun opportunities to add custom features(mistakes) to your sails!! :-)
I chose to go with white sails on my Micro because I found that
tanbark, while looking"traditional", is not the kind of sail you want
to be looking at when the weather starts to turn or if you are out at
night. At night, because you become just that much harder to spot(
from the perspective of some speeding drunk maniac racing to get home
late at night) and I always noticed how "top heavy" my Elver became
in gray rainy conditions. What should have been "billowing"sails took
on the appearance of some big dark towering mass of gloom and weight
ready to roll me at the first sign of inattention from me.
Just my own experience......for what it is worth :-)

Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan
Don't know about dacron but to dye any organic cloth in tanbark is
easy. just collect wattle bark and place with sails in a large plastic
container and leave for a few days.

Hi Bruce

Don't bother. Finished sail cloth really doesn't dye well at all. Sell them
and buy 'tanbark' dacron is the best method. If you want I can stick a few
scraps of sailcloth in an envelope for you to try the tea....

Cheers
Derek
