Re: Seabird 86

Good on ya, Stefan.

Where have you been sailing? Have you sailed out in any big water like
the Med, North, Baltic, & Black Seas, etc?

Have you found the accomodations to be adequate when aboard for a
lengthty time? Has the cabin space been ok for you?

Hello to all Seabird fans,

yes, the seabird building homepage is not updated since 2003. Because
the boat is sailing since that time.
I'm very satisfied with the boat, and it is a good sailboat. Since
2003, I've compleded the boat. But there is no
modification in design, or rig etc. So the website is always in time.

Stefan

This is the only project I know of:
http://ca.geocities.com/nohnpages/The

website has not been updated for 5 years.

This design is high on my wish list, but Windsprint is much more likely
within my grasp.

Chris,

Thanks for the link.

I've poked around some but haven't found anything else posted by Nohn as to how his boat worked out.

I was kinda hoping Paul T would chime in as last year he was about to begin construction of a Seabird86 in California. I do know for a fact he had the lead for the ballast keel.

I have no knowledge or training to back this up but it always seemed to me that Seabird86 would sail well.

Ah--the getting the boat on the trailer pictures.

I borrowed a truck and trailer one morning to help Mark Zeiger launch
his Martha Jane. We figured a two hours and it would be in the water.
Seven hours later and with the help of numerous innocent bystanders now
draftees we were finally ready to head for the Marina.

That is one [reduced size] photo of a series of eight that
was previously on a website of a Seabird86 named
"Blue Air". Afraid I don't remember much more, and
it seems to have fallen out of Google's index.
I noticed a link to a photo of what must be Seabird 86 over at the

I believe it might be the one built in Germany awhile ago, but I have

Paul,

I used to buy WaterCraft at the Barnes & Noble on Solomon's Island
Rd. I now subscribe, so I don't know if they still carry it or not.

If you get desperate, you can order one copy for 7.95 (possibly plus
shipping). Info here:http://www.watercraft.co.uk/index.htm

There is a US toll-free number to the US distributor in Maine.

Paul, try Fawcett's over by the hotel & Annapolis Yacht Club. I
believe they carry it. I can't find WC reliably either, but I think I
bought a copy of WC there last year.

I've written to Phil Bolger & Friends proposing this idea.

I built my Chebacco with the ballast keel shown in "Boats With an
Open Mind".

<You don't say how much accomdation you want> (snip)

I built my Chebacco with an enlarged cabin (it extends aft to the
next frame) The Seabird 86 cabin is about the same size. My thought
about using a cat yawl or yawl rig would be to get the mast out of
the center of the cabin and in the case of a yawl rig allow it to
sail with "jib and jigger" in heavy weather.

Neither one is Bolger's Sea Bird. One is designed by T.F. Day & C.D. Mower,
and the Plywood one is designed by Charles G. MacGregor. My curiosity got
stirred (I couldn't spell picqued) and after a survey of all the plans they
sell I couldn't find a single Bolger Plan.

If you've never seen an original Seabird, last month I stumbled upon one at
the Charleston shipyard. Pretty sorry looking, I hope it wasn't waiting for
the chainsaw...

A very interesting question, and one that should be put directly to
Mr. Bolger. Among the responses you may get are to keep your Chebacco
and retrofit the ballast keel of the motorsailer version. I know that
Bolger thinks that the Chebacco is a pretty safe boat.

You don't say how much accomdation you want, or how much you care
about it. There are other possibilities, including the Summer Ease
(if accomodation is not important) and Red Zinger (if it is).

I guess you imagine putting the mast against the forward bulkhead
where the WC is. The effect of having the weight up there is not
good, so you want the master's opinion if it is tolerable.

Peter
Greetings Bolgerphiles,

Well, like many of my fellow boat builders I have now started
thinking seriously about my next boat. I like everything about my
Chebacco, she is a wonderful boat to me. HOWEVER, I have a hankering
for something with which I can go out on the ocean with a bit less
timidity. This boat with a cat yawl rig like the Chebacco is my
thought - that would get the mast out of the middle of the cabin and
I would hope provide the wonderful balancing ability that my Chebacco
has. Anyone here have any personal experience with this boat? I have
found one website that shows the beginnings of construction by a man
by the name of Nohn. Phil Bolger talks in BWAOM of sailing aboard one
of these - Anyone know whose boat that is?
