Re: gin poles/Catboat Bulletin
Tablernacles you bet. I would be interested in anything on
tablernacles.
tablernacles.

Thank you for those inspiring gin pole & tabernacle articles. I have
an old 19' catboat sitting out in the garage awaiting new caulking,
new sails, new rigging, new CB, new rudder, new paint etc. -- a fine
little project boat. But the main worry I've had was how to make her
trailerable, as we live at least an hour from good sailing water, and
I'd like to be able to take her anywhere on the east coast. I didn't
want to hack a tabernacle into her after the fact, so the gin pole
rigs are an elegant solution.
About your files -- they're saved in "color" even though they're
black and white. See if you can convert to grayscale -- the file size
will be only about 25% of the RGB color files.
It may be that the big run on your Geocities page is over and the
point is now moot, but I imagine it's a total megabyte transfer they
limit, so if you have the smaller files, 4 times as many people can
download them. I have Photoshop here and can help on any future
files -- just send them to me first and I'll make them as small as
possible without sacrificing quality.
Thanks again!
All best,
Garth

> I got in and loaded the first 2, had to return later for the rest.It may be that there is a limit to the amount of traffic allowed to
the free Geocities site. I'm somewhat stymied about the size of the
files. If I scan them at lower resolution, the print gets fuzzy and
the smaller items on drawings become illegible. Somefolks seem to be
able to get smaller files in .gif format, but none of my software
seems to do that.
As of right now, I hope to scan a couple tabernacle articles today.

Hello Peter,
Been following the thread on the stepping of large
masts - very interesting - but have been unable to
download the links below. I keep getting the message
"unavailable at the present time..". Would be
interested too in any of the suggested info on
tabernacles - there is still the possibility of a
well-used Black Skimmer appearing on my horizon.
It would be much appreciated if you could email any
info direct to me.
Many thanks,
Andrew.

Peter,
thanks for the posts. I have reinforced the iron pipe with a square
30" sleeve in the middle. It does not flex now. I also placed it in
a tabernacle over the centreboard trunk. It can lift a large bucket
of water. I will gradually work my way up to mast weight.
Do you have the 1978 Fall Bulletin? I need to know who won the 1978
Fall Catboat Association race in stonington. My boat has a plaque
that says she was the winner, but the boat has changed hands several
times since then.
I will post some pictures tomorrow.

Looking at the Black Skimmer, and trying to figure out the best way to
reef. Currently I am thinking the sail should be on a track so the luff
reef cringle can lower past the sprit/snotter with our hanging up with
a variant of jiffy reefing run to sprit.

Looking through the Catboat bulletin back issues, I found no fewer
than seven article on mast stepping of various degrees of relevance
including the one I mentioned: "How to make a catboat truly
trailerable" by Allen Reynolds, March 1978. It just goes to show how
useful the bulletin can be. I'll see what I can do about getting the
up on the web.
I also set aside three or four articles about masts and tabernacles
which are of interest to many Bolgeristas.

Keep in mind that the strength (and stiffness, which is crucial in
buckling) go with the cube and 4th power of the diameter. I think 1" pipe
is pretty small for something 20' long. I'll bet if you made a square beam
out of two or 4 2X4's (or just one 4X4) it would be a lot stronger and
stiffer, even though wood is more flexible than steel. If 4 2X4, it could
be hollow in the middle and even stiffer. Also, the shorter you can make it
the stronger it will be.
