Re: Savannah redux
Rav,
I live on St. Simons. Your post stripped your off-group email. Mine isjamessloan@...
Contact me off list sometime since we're in the same neighborhood.
Like you, I've never rented a boat around here, do you suppose 2-Way marina might have something...maybe Lockwood in Shellman Bluff?

Harry, I live 50 miles South of Savannah, and I've noted your
posts.
Unfortunately, I have never rented a boat there (or anywhere else)
and have no real
answers to your specific inquiries. There is a maritime museum in
downtown
Savannah called "Ships of the Sea". I've never visited. There are
a variety of
historic buildings and sites of interest one can see, simply by
walking through the
older parts of the city, laid out in squares, down to the
waterfront. I have done
this many, many times and usually find something new (well new to
me) every
time I do so.
My favorite historic site is Fort Pulaski, located on the old
causeway to Tybee
island. I used to play there often as a child.
Savannah has a rather decent Tourism site you might mine for links
related to
boat rentals, etc. It ishttp://www.savannah-online.com/
And, if you get really bored some evening, you're welcome to stop by
and
have a cold one and look at the rough amatuer attempts in my messy
boatshed.
Maybe even a little puttering on the river. Little bit of a drive
though.
Drop me a line offlist.

Harry,
If you are in Savannah for a whole year, I'd say the whole East Coast
is your cruising grounds! If you make it up to the Northern Chesapeake
Bay, give me a call.

Well I will try one more time, I will be in Savannah area from about mid
Oct to Christmas. Looking for shallow draft boat rentals, maritime
things to do and anybody building that wants to show off their project.
I will be leaving the group tomorrow for a year except for an
occaisional check in. It feels like I am leaving a bunch of freinds even
though I havn't met any of you, except of course for the juneau members.

Just to bring the subject to an appropriate upsummation (well, you can
say that in Danish) I picked up the April 2002 issue of Wooden Boat
magazine no. 165, and lo and behold there are two very relevant and
clearly illustrated articles on the topic, most of which re-state and
confirm the clear explanations I've enjoyed and benefited from here on
the board. There is also mention of an article about sprit rig basics
in WB no. 89 which I don't have to hand, but the issue is available.
