Yep, and only 971 miles (just a tad over 3000 kms. round trip) each
way. What's the big deal? You should see where I go when I want some
Mexican food!
Anyway, it was the biggest, best attended, most boats Messabout I've
ever been too. It'll be a challenge making the Kingston Messabout
biiger and/or better, so get working on that Windemere Peter!
Boats in attendance included:
Bolger: Stretched Micro, Birdwatcher, Chebacco Cruiser Model, work
boat finish Nymph (mine), Improved June Bug.
Michalak: two AF4s, Piccup Pram, gaff rigged D4 pram, Piragua 18,
ROAR.
Other designers: Four (YES 4!!!!) Skiff America 20s, beautiful Cedar
Stip Melonseed, 20' Selway Fisher camp cruiser, cabinless Stevenson
Weekender, a 16' Coleman canoe with a two masted Junk/Ketch rig, Six
Hour Canoe, 16' Jetfish (a seadoo powered plywood skiff that really
moved), modified Glen L Utility that flew, a few aluminum and FG
boats, and many curious people.
All at a pretty good campground without a pit toilet in sight. We
stayed at a Super 8 down the road a bit. I'm too old for this camping
on the damp ground stuff.
On the way back we snooped around the riverfront in Louisville,
Kentucky where we saw a half dozen steam paddle wheelers and watched
a big tow being pushed upstream by a very strong tow boat (why do
they call them that when they actually push?) while sipping on a
Sammy Adams in a waterfront restaurant.
Good trip!
I've sent an article with far too many pictures to Chuck at Duckworks
today, if I know Chuck he'll have my scratchings perfectly edited and
up soon.

We got lots of ideas to help the Kingston Messabout a great one, and
observing this one led us to dream up a few inovations too.

Thanks Richard,
We're heading out around noon today, s/b around Detroit overnight and
arrive Rend Lake Friday night. We'll be staying in a motel, but will
bring folding chairs to sit around the fire and gam boats.
Bring a Nymph and/or Pirogue plus very recent photos of my Seagull.
Is there a prize from longest drive?

From JM's site:
THE 14TH ANNUAL MIDWEST HOMEBUILT BOAT MESSABOUT will take place at Rend
Lake in Southern Illinois on the weekend of June 7 and 8. Lots of folks come
on Friday and leave early Sunday. Take I-57 to exit 77W and then follow the
signs to the Gun Creek Recreation Area. Camping at this Corps of Engineers
facility is $10/night and that includes the ramp fee. There is no schedule
of events except a pot luck dinner in the campground on Saturday evening- we
wing it. This year some of us have reserved the campsites on the water of
the two middle camping loops so look for us there if we aren't at the boat
ramp.

Can someone post driving directions to thr Rend Lake messabout? And
the exact name of the campground so I can plug it into Mapquest?
I was trying to get "Twisted Seagull" ready, but I'm just not gonna'
make it, so I'm taking some photos of a 90% completed Welsford
Seagull, and throwing the "Ada E", my wife's Bolger Nymph in ther
back of the truck. If there's room I'll toss in the world's ugliest
Payson Pirogue also.
We're heading out this afternoon, if I've got the directions.
See ya'all there.
