I couldn't help but notice that the
large majority of the problems you
encountered involved your truck,
your job; your 'land life' so-to-speak.

Even the boat related problem had to
do with the launching of the boat
from your 'land life'.

This begs the question, what would your
life be like as a live-aboard? No car,
no job, no schedule...??? It is hard
to imagine.

Have you ever read Annie Hills book
_Voyaging on a Small Income_?
Curtis,
You must lead some sort of charmed life.......I would have been
feeding the fishys at the bottom of the St.Lawrence river if I ever
refered to my Pesky Crew as swill or "swwil"(same pronunciation). But
then again, judging by this days adventures, you seem to have
something of a curse haunting you. I hope not!!!
Good luck with your temporarily abandoned fleet.

That would be me, and the Lightfoot 21 (Bay Hen hull, open cockpit,
cat ketch rig - or is it a schooner, as the rigs seem identical? See
HensNest group for more detail).

Had a nice chat with Lincoln as I launched it into the Charles River
in Waltham MA - above the second dam. I was planning to give boat
rides at an evening picnic for my son's pre-school, a mile or so
upriver.

Unfortunately, I was a bit distracted. Pulled truck and trailer away
from the ramp, locked up, and discovered the keys were in the
ignition. No problem, had a phone in my pocket, then realized SWWIL
[she whose whim is law*] was in meetings with clients from England.
And I had to pick up the kids...

So, after flailing for a while, decided to motor up to the picnic,
get help there. Gas hose backwards... Got out rig, and noticed lots
of water in the big, open bilge. Did I remember the drain plug?
Motored and bailed, arrived at park, waited for somebody to arrive,
borrowed car from the school's director ...

Got things back on track, taking out 20 or 30 kids in shifts; the big
cockpit can easily hold 8 little kids and 2 adults. High coamings
let them kneel on seats, leaning out. Most loved it, a couple were
terrified.

Had to rush off to a meeting at City Hall (not boat related), so
decided to leave boat there at park (it's High School Graduation
night, hope for heavy rain to keep partiers away) and hitch ride with
SWWIL and her keys (5 miles or so by road). Get trailer ready for
the road, load kids (one with suspicious odors from the diaper
region) and SWWIL into truck, and get ready to drive away in the
Honda - and SWWIL asks "did you leave the lights on or something?

But it's OK, I know there's a brand new pair of jumper cables in the
trunk. Negotiate huge expanses of mud to get batteries close enough,
hook up jumper cables from the tiny Honda battery (D-cells?) to the
truck, race the engine, see light go on in truck's engine
compartment. Light goes dim, and out, as the big V8's starter tries
to kick in. But it won't turn over. Play this game for a while, then
load kids back into Honda, put away jumper cables, which are now very
hot, and race away. I'll deal with abandoned truck, trailer, and boat
tomorrow.

Dump out SWWIL and kids at home, then on to City Hall. 8:30 - an
hour late, which should be OK, as we're third on the agenda. Rush
into meeting room, in soggy shoes, filthy jeans, a bit dirty and
smelly. Then, wait. At 11:30, they finished agenda item 1b ...

Was biking by boat launch in town and someone was launching a neat
looking sharpie. Stopped to talk for a while and discovered he was on
this list. Had to run, but did not discover in a quick look at the
member list. Hoping Curtis will send me a note to: lincolnr at rcn.com
particularly if he wants Brick ride.
Must run again.
