Re: Pirate Racer & Pirate Races Help!
Rules for Pirate Racing
1) Races to be sailed around a course decided by the race committee.
2) Each boat to have a two-man crew.
3) The use of oars is permitted at any time.
4) Before race begins, crews will be given sealed orders naming them
Treasure Ships, Pirate, or Neutrals (numbers of each decided by the
race committee.)
5) Race starts with boats in the water behind a chosen line. A horn
will sound will five minutes before starting time. Racing commences
at the second horn or when a Treasure Ship decides to start.
6) Treasure Ships must display the yellow Treasure Flag as they cross
the starting line. The Pirates fly the Jolly Roger and the Neutrals
no flag of their own.
7) All others may start as soon as a Treasure Ship as started.
8) When an overlap occurs, the overtaken ship is required to
surrender its flag. No boarding or physical contact between crews is
permitted. Flags are flown from staffs on the transom.
9) Pirate Ships are not obliged to show their Jolly Roger until
making an attack on a Treasure Ship (i.e., trying to remove the
Treasure Flag from another boat). The Jolly Roger, once shown, must
be left in place.
10) Neutrals may not attack Treasure Ships - they must first become
Pirates by capturing a Jolly Roger.
11) All captured flags must be immediately flown.
12) Boats may cut the course to make attacks, but will be
disqualified if they do not subsequently complete the course.
13) Points will be awarded as follows: First Place, 3 points; Second
Place, 2 points; Third Place, 1 point; Treasure Flag, 3 points;
Jolly Roger, 2 points.

I cannot help thinking that the people with motor boats miss a great deal.
If they would only keep to rowboats or canoes, and use oar or paddle...
they would get infinitely more benefit than by having their work done for
them by gasoline. <Theodore Roosevelt>
Trouble is I've
Tony Groves tried pirate racing in the 3 pirate racers he built but
it didn't work out the way described in Boats WAOM, so they did
something different....but, I'm darned if I can remember what he said
they did!
When I raced with him we just raced boat for boat.

I'm teaching some juniors (eg 10-13 or so) sailing this summer. I'm
thinking of having a couple Pirate Races a la Bolger. Trouble is I've
loaned out my copy of Boats WAOM and so...
Anyone ever run a Pirate Race? Howja do it? What worked? What didn't?
