RE : [bolger] Re: Hello All...Sneakeasy/Idaho

Pretty boat, I wonder if I understand the shape of the bottom, which
appears to be on a compound curve. Bending plywood might not take
that shape easy. It could be planked maybe.

Peter,

I think you're right in the american context, but the comments were
written for French amateur boatbuilders which are (alas, due to very
restrictive rulings) used to deal with heavy framing structures and very
unfamiliar with the concept of instant boats.
Instant boats would not have a chance to be certified in France, where
CE rules are required to commission a boat if you wish to get more than
300 yards from the coats (no sh*t). tho say it shortly, If you wish to
build something taller, a bass boat or an auray punt, you have to comply
with the French version of CE norms (CE means EC for english speaking
people) which are the most restrictive in the world... ;-). One have to
look at the plans of a 'corsaire' (surely the most widely builded plan
in France) to see what French rules mandate to do :-(.
This explains that ;-)
Nevertheless you're right, the framing on 'camargue' has to be a heavy
one.. It's a 30 feet boats, intended for outboards of 150+ hp, but its
designed to be built with plywoord too..I think that the hull can be
stitch'n'glued if there are enough bulkheads...
If someone wants more info, feel free..
Sorry for my approximative technical english...

Phil,
Very pretty boat!!! Although you mention that this is a hull
designed for plywood construction and that it should be "easy for an
amateur", I wonder if you've taken into account the substantial
framing required, especially forward from amidship, to deal with the
increased loads which will come from high speed wave running? Getting
all those frames "just right" will require a firm grasp of
lofting, something alot of "amateurs" sadly miss out on with instant-
boat type construction.
I hope someone does indeed commission you to complete this
design and actually build it......she would be most impressive at
30kts :-)

Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan

By the way, I designed this one too :http://tanyu.free.fr/camargue.html
, which is strongly inspired by the sneakeasy, but with a true bluewater
hull, longer and wider, intended for high power outboards.

Comments are very welcome.

You can see other designs on this site, too..(sorry it's in French, I

Here's one possible scenario:
Bolger: "Dynamite, I don't think I am getting enough for these plans. I think we should raise the prices."
Dynamite: "Gee, Phil, if we do that, I might not get any more sales, and lose my income."
Bolger: "Yes. I've got commissions to keep me going, but it would seem unfair to you. How about this: I'll raise my prices to discourage people from bothering me with stock plans, and you keep them the same to continue your sales."
Dynamite: "Thanks for understanding, Phil. You are a pal."
Chuck (is the horse dead yet?) Leinweber
I suppose their deal includes Dynamite paying a royalty. Dynamite
charges so little for his plans, there cannot be much of a royalty
due. Also, if I am not mistaken, PB&F charges the public
considerably more than Dynamite charges for the same set of plans.

It doesn't add up in my mind, unless you consider that these two guy
have been relating together for a very long time, and that they are
good friends. I'm not sure I know though.

Peter is of course correct, buying the plans would be best.

For a quick model, blow up the plans for Sneakeasy in Boats With An
Open Mind to whatever size you like, then trace them directly onto
boxboard, balsa, whatever for a quick and dirty model.

I wonder why Dynamite Payson
seems to be an exception.

Bruce:

What makes you think that Payson is an exception? I'm just curious. It seems to me that he is simply a reseller of plans, who gives a commission to PCB&F, just as I do with Jim Michalak and John Welsford. Relationships like this can be harmonious or turn sour, and it mostly depends on the personalities of ALL involved.

Chuck - beating that dead horse for all he's worth

Re: Payson,

A friendhip can wear pretty thin if a business deal that comes from
it insn't honoured. I'll bet Dynamite pays his commissions/royalties
on time, every time. And not only lives up to the letter of their
agreement, whatever that may be, but goes further.

I'll bet he lives up to the spirit of it as well.

Several years ago I began the custom design process with our Hero.It
was a fascinating process but unfortunately events in my life went
through some rather big and dramatic changes which ultimately forced
me to bring the whole exercise to a grinding halt.
However, during the course of many pleasent correspondences with
Mr.Bolger,I did bring up that whole question about rights to this
custom design of mine, just out of vain curiosity.
The upshot was this; although the custom design process did entitle
me to the right of getting things designed exactly( or as close as
techniquely possible) to my wishes/tastes and the notority
of "owning" my own custom designed vessel it did little else.
Mr.Bolger explained that the actual design would remain his sole
property to dispose of as he wished.I had no exclusivity over that
design. The only way I could do that would be to put up a lot of cash
and even then,it would only allow me to build and sell more of the
same model.

Hello Bow,

I'll spit it out and say"just buy the plans".They are not all
that expensive, will give you the best look at what is involved with
building one of them full size(in your future time and place) and may
even be good for bringing to a messabout in your area,(unless you are
another KING OF THE ROAD,like Bruce Hector) for trading with
other "collectors" of plans.Your precise scaled models will be a joy
to treasure and display not to mention accurate representations of
the actual boats themselves.
By the time you find yourself in the"right" time and place, you
could then proceed with the full sized building of the one which
inspired you the most while you sat on the thunder box admiring its
gentle lines and envisioning yourself actually using her.
As some well known person once said,it will be"like déjà-vu all
over again" !
Anyway,just my .02 cents worth.

Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan

Yes, how true!

The 'agreement' is what matters.
Obviously, Dynamite Payson has
an 'agreement' to sell PCB plans.

Who knows what PCB and LaRowe
agreed to?

Similar case for Idaho, I don't
know what PCB:Wolfard's agreement
was; but my point is: That the
rights for Idaho could easily be
different than the rights for the
LaRowe commissioned plans.

LOLLOLLOL!
Thanks Doug....

I was going to look for a copy of that myself... Maybe I'll get lucky
at one of the local Barnes and Nobles....but I won't bet on it!

I like the Sneakeasy design a lot for it's classic lines, but I could
never see myself building one as there is no camp out room in
it...that is the reason I like the Idaho...
Thanks for teh link on the Hulls program...I was just trying to
figure it out...hmmm...this could take a little bit!

Thanks again,

Bow

One good leap deserves another....

My understanding of boat designing is that just because one commissions a design does not mean that one holds the rights to build more than one of said boat, or that one has the right to sell even one copy of the plans. I suppose a contract could be written any way one wanted, but I don't think that most commissioned designs are the exclusive property of the customer.

This is going to be a real leap
of speculation, but...

You don't hear very much about Idaho,
but 15+ years ago, Idaho was the
boat that brought PCB's creativity
to my attention. I was mind-boggled
at the concept of a boat designer
designing a boat 'for wheel chair use'.

Since then, of course, PCB has
continued to boggle my mind.

Never-the-less, I understood that
Idaho was comissioned by Bernie
Wolfard, and as such, it might be
the only boat that he might actually
own the rights. {since sold?}

[I am only speculating.] The ownership
rights to all the designs he aquired
from Rev. Elrow LaRowe are probably
different than the rights to Idaho, a
design Bernie comissioned personally.

I have always speculated that PCB and
Rev. LaRowe had some sort of 'handshake'
agreement, that was lost upon the Rev's
passing. Just what this agreement was,
and how or whether it was passed to
Bernie Wolfard is not clear to me.

[Just speculating!] And if some think
this is flogging a dead horse, I don't
recall that we have ever discussed the
difference between the LaRowe CSB/CSD
boats and the Wolfard CSB/CSD boat.

Hi Bow,

I also live in Houston and I have a copy of Boats with an Open Mind
by Bolger.

I am not sure about the Idaho but the Sneakeasy is in it with a set
of plans that are probably good enough to scale up for builing a
model. I wouldn't want to try it full size from them but it should
give you enough for the model.

Let me know.

Doug

Bow,

Few will actually recommend you actually purchase plans from Common Sense Boats anymore,
but except for the plank expansions, you may find what you need for model making here.
http://www.common-sense-boats.com/boats/BoatsIMAGES/idaholine.gif
It is 31' 0" x 5' 3"

Get this program:
http://a4.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/EOzxPg99Dyb6wu6ZHn0cWgDABjPtyIF2jlgTaSiXgc56nNkd2WKSAxms2PmjDc9870a4wSzwRfiOJax1cB-LuwFXVhY/%22%2A.hul%22%20Design%20Files%20%26%20Hull%20Designer/HULLS.HTM
Both versions of Sneakeasy are included, and you can enter your scaling from the idaho
study sheet to render the expansions.

Making models first is a time honored way of building. Good luck.

Hello,

My Name is Bow and I am in Houston Tx...

I have been looking into building some Model Boats from Scratch out
of Balsa and I really like the Sneakeasy and the Idaho models.

My problem is I can find and good clear pictures of the Idaho to get
some sort of scale off of and the drawings of the Sneakeasy I did
find are not clear enough to read the numbers...
http://www.instantboats.com/sneakeasy.htm

Can anyone help me out? I would love to build the real thing one day,
but I am not in the correct time or place to do it....

Thanks

Bow
