Hello Mark, I just looked in my copy of Gardner's "The DORY BOOK"
and there is a small picture of what appears to be the type of motor
well you are talking about. It appears to be just what you said. It is
a box mounted with a smaller box inside it. Mounted on the outside of
the bottom there is a piece of rubber that is slit lengthwise that
allows the lower unit of the motor to stick through and I suspect that
it would create enough siphon vortex to keep the water level low in
the box while running and definitely stop prop wash from going over
the top of the well. The one in the picture measurers 10" wide, 14"
long and 20" tall on the forward edge and it slopes up toward the
stern at about an angle of 30 degrees or so. These demensions are for
the inside of the inside box. Braces are shown at the four corners
between the side of inner box and the outer box. It fits flush front
and rear. That is all I can tell from the picture. The picture is less
that 3/4 of and inch square so it is difficult to make out much
detail. Good Luck. Tom on Sandpiper.

Anyone know of drawings, pictures or text for the Allan Vaitses type of outboard motor well?
It's a box within a box that lifts straight up.

Thanks,
