A balanced lug would be very docile. Tom Colvin says to ignore the
area ahead of the mast when figuring the center of effort location.
After that, it's justa question of mast rake. I've found in very
small boats that if you can achieve some *forward* rake, they're a
LOT more fun to sail in light airs, as the yard and boom then tend to
stay out at 90-deg to the boat. This may mean a slightly longer boom
to keep th CE int he same place.

Use something light like a nice 2.5-inch bamboo for the yard.

You could also consider getting a used Opti sail (free, cheap) or a
generic Opti club racing sail (about $125 from Optiparts). At 33 sq
ft it would be easy for the kid to handle. You can rig is as a lug
instead of a sprit using wooden/bamboo spars.

i am just at the stage of finishing the hull and have started
thinking about mast and sails, and here i would appreciate some
advice. my g'son, aged 5-6 is going to be taught to sail in this
and then go onto an optimist with his school class. we also sail in
open sea, albeit a large bay.

for these reasons i have been thinking about putting a lug sail on
the punt, as i have seen some comment about the 15ft mast helping
with a rolling motion. my sketch for myself is a 9ft stick with a
balanced lug - i have been reading michalak essays, and i have sailed
a dipping lug 27ft british naval whaler for a number of yrs.

i have no idea of the maths but i would think the change of sail
would also shift the foot and rake of the mast - any ideas pse would
be gratefully received
