Re: barrier reef cruiser V2

Hugo,

I see you've been stretching the Shivaree design. Are you aware that
PCB has done the same thing with his Fisherman's Launch, featured in
BWAOM? The chapter on this design takes up a page comparing the
stretched design with the original under different power options etc.
Well worth reading.

I have always admired Merlin,
which has that intangible Bolger
characteristic, of being simply
well suited for the task.

I especially like the detail,
where the rudder folds over so
that it shouldn't be measured
as 'length' for calculating
the per foot charge in a marina.

I am thrilled to see the photos
you posted and would love to see
a photo or two of the cockpit and
cabin.
Here's a picture of "Merlin"(Go to photo album at the Yahoo Bolger group site) originally called Marina Cruiser in" Boats With An Open Mind".My father built her in 1997-'98 and she was launched a couple of days before Christmas in 1998.Top speeds 6.5 Kts with a Yanmar 2GM20, 18HP 2cyl, Diesel which is.very economical on fuel. She sails at least as well as she motors if not better, given a decent wind.Though being a Dipping Lug tacking is slow and needs two people to manage it easily, but the main point of of the rig is to provide auxillary power at little cost and complexity, but with maximum drive which a Dipping lug does as it can be thought of having much the same properties of a Genoa jib
