RE: [bolger] Re Bolger Snow Leopard

How about a DBD Drive

http://www.dbdmarine.com/dbdmarine.htm

The price is still very high on thse compared to an outdrive, which is a
lot more complex.

Inboard Installation will be offered, but one of my main aims was to have
shallow draft and an easily beachable craft ,without the worries of
grounding-out on the prop. and stressing-damaging the prop, strut and
shaft.Phil told me he had an idea of how to achieve this(Shoal draft) but
didn't go into much detail apart from comparing it to a "centerboard "type
arrangement with the jet drive unit or propeller and shaft.(Maybe
something like a Dispro boat or that Duck Chalon featured in Wooden Boat
afew issues ago, though I hope its a bit more sophisticated! and strong-VERY
STRONG to cope with the stresses imposed by a V-8 of approx 250-350HP.

Yes ,We will be starting construction(of Snow Leopard- possibly to be named "Arethusa") as soon as humanly possible when the plans are completed, and there's room in the workshop to start.
At the moment my father is about half-way through building a Bolger "Harbinger" 15'0''x7'1'' Cat Boat which should be ready by Nov.-Dec. this year. That should give us some time to get some timber in and season it if necessary. The project to build "Snow Leopard / Arethusa" will be a joint project between myself,my brother and my father(Bruce Tyson) who is a very experienced Boatbuilder, albeit non-professional,and has built approximately 20+Boats, ranging from a 7'9'' Elegant Punt to Bolger's 30' "Romp" design Cat Ketch Ocean Cruiser.
The snow Leopard design has been reduced in size to make trailering and Launch-retrieving a little bit easier. We set the dimensions at 26'0'' x 6'6'' instead of 28'0'' x 7'0'' .Apparently Bolger will offer a number of different propulsion choices with the design,We talked about the feasibility of waterjet drive(Which after some research and consideration, I would opt for, if its feasable, though the "torpedo" stern may make this difficult.)Another option was Outboard power such as a Large 4 stroke, though I'm not sure how this would work without spoiling the general layout and appearence of the boat. Also a conventional Inboard Installation will be offered, but one of my main aims was to have shallow draft and an easily beachable craft ,without the worries of grounding-out on the prop. and stressing-damaging the prop, strut and shaft.Phil told me he had an idea of how to achieve this(Shoal draft) but didn't go into much detail apart from comparing it to a "centerboard "type
arrangement with the jet drive unit or propeller and shaft.(Maybe something like a Dispro boat or that Duck Chalon featured in Wooden Boat afew issues ago, though I hope its a bit more sophisticated! and strong-VERY STRONG to cope with the stresses imposed by a V-8 of approx 250-350HP.
Another option which I haven't discussed with Phil Bolger yet is to power the craft with a moderately powerful 80-160HP marine Diesel or marine conversion diesel for a more sedate top speed of around 25-35Kts,instead of the 50-55Kts I first had in mind..Environmentally and in the longrun economically this would prove to be a better option than a large and very thirsty petrol(gasoline) V8,especially if one were able to brew up enough "biodiesel" cheaply..
Even a smallish diesel capable of pushing the hull(which will slice nicely through the chop and clip along at a reasonable pace before planing) to about 20Kts (Top speed) and cruise economically at 15Kts would be an option for someone who isn't in all that much of a hurry to get places, and they'd have a really elegant fast "Launch" in the bargain!.
Hull construction at the moment is to be strip planked-totally fibreglass sheathed and finished as specified in the book-gleaming gloss white with chrome &/or stainless steel trim.
Yes, building the complex shape may be a bit tricky, but we have the experience!
