That's just what Philip Bolger said to me! when I obtained those plans from him about 1985. The
tremendous cabin room, big cockpit and Square Boat cachet are all qualities that might make Anhinga
best for someone.

I never had room to build and store a 24 foot boat. If building Anhinga now, I'd have a full length
slot top on the cabin.

Thinking about it more, that
cockpit isn't necessarily an
'error'.

The person in the doodle would
be about 5'4" tall. The boat
would sail at a pretty good angle
of heel, so you would be looking
over the 'lowered' lee rail while
sailing.

The tiller could be handled with
lines from a seated position, or
you could rig a higher seat, *or*
simply stand up while sailing.

I just read the 2001 threads about
Anhinga, and the essence was that
there was a write up in _Wooden Boat_
of one that had been build but it had
stability problems. But, that one wasn't
'per plans' so it was an open question
whether a real Anhinga would be good or not.

I might be inclined to inquire with
PCB to add some ballast, to be more safe.
Maybe the water ballast could be extended
forward some. Or, like Birdwatcher, one
could thicken up the bottom plywood for
more weight down low.

With another think you might find me
building a Birdwatcher first.

Bruce,
Checked out your scan and doodled crew.......perhaps the scale is
a wee bit off.Bolger really isn't known for errors of that
magnitude, certainly not at the date of the ANHINGA design.

Just a thought......:-)

There was a long thread in 2001
about Anhinga starting at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bolger/message/15387

I haven't read it yet, but will soon.
I hate publicly demonstrating my lazy refusal to check the archives, but
weren't there some second thoughts by PCB regarding this design (I believe
something about the narrow stern and flat run aft)?

Anhinga, about 16 sheets of 1/4" plywood
40 2x4"'s, six gallons epoxy, could be
had for $2,000 I bet. Would be a quick
build too...

'Hawsehole', a new word for me.

I love it when I come across a
new [to me] Bolger design.

Mark, good job with the scan,
line drawings are soooo much
easier to read when saved as
"GIF's" in black and white.

The more common "jpg's" are
*no good* for line drawings.

I am confused though, sitting
on the benches in the cockpit,
it seems that you could only
barely 'see out', and a small
adult and child would not be able
to see at all. Also, the location
of the tiller seems such that
your arm could not reach it
unless you were standing up all
the time.??

see:

http://www.hallman.org/bolger/anhinga/person.gif
Pete,

Sorry. My original scans were huge. In reducing them to 1/8th size to have a handy screenful,
something got lost in translation.

There are now more legible versions in
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bolger3/files/Anhinga/

Same disclaimer applies.

Anyone got a little higher quality scan of these? I can't read them
very well at all.

Harry,
AHA is right! That is one handsome looking boat and just one of
many I would love to own, if I were rich and had 9 lives like a cat.
I sometimes wonder where John MacDaniels(sp) is with his project. If
I remember correctly, they were the ones who actualy commissioned
this design from Bolger. It is just full of really crafty
ideas/solutions all set to make this a first class live-a-board for
John and family.Perhaps he'll surprise us all with some progress
photos :-)

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan, not visually impaired but a real sucker for eye-candy
in any form,as long as it floats, from along the shores of the
St.Lawrence........
AHA, a perusal of the files and I find Antspray in Bolger 2 that is the
one I was thinking of. Antispray-Anhinga They both begin with A and have
an N in them. Easy enought to confuse, ones a sailing canoe type the
other a large Ocean going boat. What the heck they both have sails.

Solution 48 rings some kind of bell. The boat I am thinking of is was
mentioned on the group several times a couple of years ago and as I
remember, obviously not a good source, it was being built in steel, and
I thought in FLA. My memory is not all that reliable , because I thought
that was Anhinga.

Why did I think that Anhinga was a 40 ft or so boat and some body was
building a steel one, probably in FLA. What boat am I thinking of?

Hello Peter, Bruce and Gary, I found the Anhinga version in the
Bolger info. Thanks for the info. Tom on Sandpiper.
I think TD said there were finished drawings for the larger one.

Hey Peter, I am not familiar with the Anhinga Sharpie. Where can I
find information on it? Tom on Sandpiper

I bet one could be built from the
single sheet "concept" drawing in
the book. PCB might need to
'weigh in' on how much lead ballast
to use. 500 lbs?

I want one!

Plus I want an Eeek!

Hello,
In Bolger's book "30-ODD BOATS" Bolger shows a sketch of a boat titled
Economy Seagoing Cruiser. He built a 1/3 scale boat, named EEK, to test the
concept which was double ended but with a straight run aft of mid-ship with
rocker forward only. Were plans ever available for the boat and was this boat
ever built. For you old Bolger fans, it was on page 2 of the book. Thanks. Tom
on Sandpiper.
